Funny little iDrive story
I guess iDrive is not designed for going over water. Yesterday I was in Balboa and took the ferry across. As I was waiting in line I noticed that the iDrive map does in fact have a little blue line that goes right across where the ferry goes so I thought this should be interesting to see my car show up in the water. No such luck. iDrive showed my car at the bank changing direction but not moving the entire trip over. The little arrow didn't know what was going on. It moved with the boat but would not show me in/on the water. Then when I drove off the ferry it suddenly showed me on the other side. Interesting... I was hoping to see my car in the water though.

A route I drive has a new by-pass and bridge over a lake .... the nav map shows me going cross-country and then turning amphibious as I go across the lake. Maybe it has to do with how wide the water obstacle is??

When I get out in the boonies I get a message that "No Navigation Available" Happens to me in Central Florida and around some North Carolina locations. Circle/arrow stop, message comes up and then when I am back on the map it takes off again. There may be differences in the way it handles nonmapped areas versus not on real roads when it assumes they should be available. Wonder what it does on long ferry trips such as in the San Juan Islands?

I always thought the car had to be moving under it's own power to track on the screen. When I go through a tunnel, the car (using my speed, etc) still tracks on the screen. At least this is the way it works with Lexus. And due to the fact that we don't get a decent Navi manual, I am just guessing now.

Usually my navigation has no problem when I go across the Holland or Lincoln Tunnel, but one day it got confused. Usually, it knows that I went into the tunnel and keeps track of the distance until the it picks up the satellites on the other end. But one time it showed me driving diagonally across the Hudson River. Having something like that to laugh at made it a little easier to deal with the miserable amount of time spent in rush hour traffic.

It could be that iDrive uses the speed of the car to determine if it is actually moving and update its co-ordinates.

The system tries to track your position to the nearest road. Because of errors in GPS tracking the display logic will always try to tie your moving image to the nearest road. That way it can track you across bridges but not across open water. If you have a side road parallel and close to a highway driving on the side road will sometimes show this "feature" at work.

I often wonder what the screen looks like if your spinning in circles. Unfortunately, if you are spinning in circles, looking at your navi isn't your first priority.
