Question E90 320D Cold Star problems

Hi Guys,

My E90 320D lately started giving staring problem during cold mornings. Rang the dealer hywycombe sytner and they said it will cost 90+ VAT to diagnose the problem, hence went to TWGautomotive in Camberly.

The guy did my clutch in the past very good...he ran the diagnostic check and 4 Glow Plugs are showing error codes so he suspects that Controller Unit is faulty needs replacing. But he also thinks once opened it could be 1 or 2 glow plugs faulty as well.

He said it would cost something between £200 to £200 for parts + labour. I looked on the net and it doesnt look like both the controller unit and the glow plugs do not cost close to £100 then is this a reasonable quote? Please suggest. Thank you.

The genuine controller is ~£100, glow plugs are about £30 each, so I'd say that's on the money

I just replaced mine,

It is a beru control unit, cost me £61 online, fitted myself in less than an hour.

I replaced four glow plugs last year and I checked the resistance on them and they where fine.

New beru glow plugs are less then £10.
Beru is bmw oem supplier.

Some people on hear don't have a clue what there talking about,

£30 for a glow plug!!!

I can give you details of supplier if you want.

Cheers

you are right..they sais they need me to leave the car for 1 day to diagnose the problem and I need to take a courtesy car...and the earliest they can do diagnosis in March 2nd and then for fitting 2 glow plugs and controller unit it is £500 GBP...what a ripoff....

licence to print money!!!

Go to the local dealer and come back when you've spoken to them about prices

In that case for me to pay between £200 to 300 for changing the controller unit and 2 glow plugs seems to be fine...at twgautomotive camberly..

Garage List
No need to spend stupid money on glow plugs - aftermarket OEM Beru ones will be a lot cheaper.

what about the control unit?

If I buy them myself, would someone fit is? generally the garages say they will get the part and fit it as well isn;t it?

go here to see the beru parts for your car

http://www.beru.com/aftermarket/product-finder

my 2006 requires

Glow Plug

ISS

GE 102

-

0 100 266 002

Control Unit, glow plug system

-

GSE 101

-

0 522 120 701

for the glow plug

buy here www.misterauto.co.uk
bosch for £8.70 each and you get 15% off

or here you get control unit and glow plugs

http://www.buycarparts.co.uk/bmw/3-s...0252/glow-plug

beru £13.98

control unit

http://www.buycarparts.co.uk/bmw/3-s...rol-unit-relay

£54.98

i can tell you for a fact that the unit i removed is a beru and the plugs i changed are beru.

Buy these parts and take them to any garage and they will fit them no bother.

If the glow plugs have never been changed i would just buy the four plugs and the relay unit have them fitted and forget about it.

Question

Guys...got a new glow plug controller and also 3 new glow plugs...one could not be replaced as it was too tight to remove...unfortunately car still sometimes doesnt start when cold and I get all sorts of DTC, cruise control yell warnings and car stops...I wait for few seconds in ignition 2 stage and restart - starts fine and for the rest of the day no issues..

not sure what else could be causing this..I know regret not taking this to BMW dealer....may be the diagnosis was not correct by twgautomotive? any thoughts please help...

I would go back to Will and speak with them it could be the glow plugs and controller was just initla problem. Also if the one not replaced is at fault you need to get it changed.

In past i had similar isue on my A3 and it was one plug pulling way too much current virtually draining the battery in instant. Changed all four and problem was solved.

If you still have one in there get that sorted and another ecu sweep as well.

Also how old is your battery have you had it tested

If that plug is faulty it will cause start problems.
When my control unit failed the engine always started just idled rough till it was warm.

If you are any good with computers you can install INPA software to find faults.

When it doesnt start, is the car cranking but not firing up? And you get bombarded with errors?
