I've read somewhere on this site that North Carolina buyers only pay 3.0% sales tax on their car purchase. Is this correct? I looked on the internet, and it says that the state sales tax rate is 4.5%

Also, I've heard Oregon does not have a sales tax. Does this mean if you buy a car in Oregon, you don't have to pay any sales tax? Thanks.

NC has a different tax for cars as opposed to other purchases, which is why it is 3%. Oregon has no sales tax, though I'm not sure if they have a separate tax for cars. However, at least in NC, you have to have a NC drivers license to purchase a new car and NC-based insurance in order to register the car there. Otherwise, you will buy the car there, bring it to your home state, and have a nice hefty sales tax bill. So unless you are moving to one of these states, its really not an option (otherwise I'd be there in a sec)

The state of New Hampshire - where I live - has no sales tax. Of course, we have high property taxes but that is another story....

Pennsylvania is definitely the place to go to buy clothes. NO sales tax on clothing here, but sorry, there's still 6% tax on cars

Alameda county, other side of SF bay also has 8.75% sales tax.. Even San francisco has 8.5%

Oregon has no sales tax and vehicle registration is only $54 for two years. Of course we have one some of the highest gas prices in the country.

But like wally said, if you buy a car in Oregon, but want to register it in another state, you'll still have to pay sales tax in your state.

I think part of the problem in Oregon with gas prices is that they won't let you pump your own gas... Full serve for everyone. That has to drive the price up. I can never figure out what that's all about. Maybe they think you will drop the pump or something...
I am in Oregon right now actually. Rest assured that California has the higher gas prices than Oregon by far, and we get to pump our own. (and we get to look at the oil rigs off the coast).

I think Seattle-area has a slight edge over the rest of the country, 8.8% sales tax, but no state income tax.

With new e90, I guess people living in Seattle can always easily and willingly go down to Oregon to buy anything with big price tag.

I remember I flew to the Tiffany at Portland years ago to buy something pricey. Round trip ticket and a new iPod were even cheaper than the tax I would've paid here in California.

Yes I said that right. The selling price. Which includes the VAT and the VRT itself (its iterative) . 30% kicks in for vehicles over 1900cc which gets most any decent car you could care to think about. So if you take a basic spec 320i costing €41,250, it breaks down as follows;

Cost of Vehicle; €24,373
VAT; €5,119
VRT; €10,908
Delivery; €850

So total taxes approx €16k or 66% of the basic price of the vehicle.

Its scandalous and because its done solely by engine size it gets more ridiculous the bigger the engine.

The taxes on the 330i are around €22k for example (which will buy you the car in the US)

DC's sales tax is 5.75% on new cars, but if you lease you pay 10% since it's taxed as a "rental car"!

6% in Florida. The cool thing is you can deduct your state sales tax from your federal income tax. Sweet!!!!

The new sales tax deduction is great for us in Texas and Florida since we have no state income taxes. However, not so useful if you live in NY, CA, or just about everywhere else, because you have to decide which to deduct, either income or sales tax, but not both! Bummer.

In SC, we pay a flat tax of $300.00. It doesn't matter if the car costs $80,000 or $10,000. You still pay $300 in tax.....pretty good huh!?

It's all about where you live, unfortunately. I could buy a car in NC but I'd still have to pay sales tax on where I register my car (NY). My county is the highest in the country. Alltogether my sales tax is 9.5%, luckily between the time I ordered my car and the time I took delivery the federal went down! When I originally ordered it was 9.75%!

I also bought from IG Burton in Delaware,as did LEDZEP. No sales tax on anything here!!
Bought my 325i with auto and Prem. Paid 34170.00 plus 2.75% one time title tax of $940.00 plus 4years tags of $80.00(20/year), miss $40.0. Total out the door for $35230.00.
