So my e90 2006 325i had the common overheating issue. Ive searched around and its normally the pump or the thermo

Last night my engine overheated and the heater was blowing cold air. Let the car cool down and i would drive for 3-5mins and it would overheat again. Parked the car overnight at my home and read the codes.
2E85,8,Electric coolant pump, communication
2E81,1,Electrical coolant pump, speed deviation

The next morning, i turned the car on and the heater was blowing hot air. I drove the car to my mechanic (very nerve racking drive) but no overheating (15min drive)

My mechanic checked temps. Check to see if the thermostat was working. Test that water pump (hear the could when it was on). Everything is checking out and we had left the car running the entire time plus the drive there.He said maybe bleeding could have resolve this issue but doesn't know till the issue comes back.


I had drove the car pretty hard for 30mins and nothing. Does any one have any clue? i do not want to be stuck some where.

IIRC the electric water pump will begin to operate erraticly (sp) when it's getting ready to go. You didn't say how many miles on the car but I would seriously consider replacement of the pump and thermo

thx for the reply! yeah the car has 90k. I didn't know which next step i should take. Could it be anything else?

When i get home i will undo the ballast i installed. I forgot to mention this happen the same day i installed my new HID ballast.

Maybe a voltage issue?

Sorry to keep posting on this thread. Should i wait till it happens again or just replace the pump and thermo? what would you do

Mine went out at 70,000 so I would get it replace as soon as possible to prevent being stranded and damage to the engine. Just my 2 cents Dealer charged me $ 969 for parts and labor.

sounds good man, i will buy the parts tonight. Its very strange because the pump and thermo are working...now lol

but i will replace to be on the safe side
