this just happened to me today:
was on the freeway and limp mode went on...thought to myself I wonder how fast the car is w/out the turbos engaged, so I floored it and the car took off quickly (heard the turbos spooling and everything) and didn't feel any limp mode hesitation. I then let off and floored it again and it took off w/ full power. when I let off the second time, limp mode went away. exited the freeway and limp mode came on, at the stop sign, I floored it and it took off strong (turbos on and strong) while limp mode stayed on. tried it again at the next stop light and again it took off strongly. while i was slowing down to make a right, limp mode suddenly went off. WTF is going on here?! has this happened to anyone here? I never once shut down the motor. (i have procede 1.45...waiting until v2 arrives) |

Yes, was also on the freeway. Didn't push it like you did, but unless I floored the limp mode sign would go completely away. Restarting fixed it though.

Same exact shit happened to me (without all the flooring it stuff) on Saturday at the 405 / 101 interchange. I really think it has something to do with the heat....

Happened to me too. Was cruising at 50mph of the freeway on 6th gear (ard1500rpm). It was raining and 80 degrees F. Wasn't accelerating or anything when I suddenly got tthe CEL. Though it showed that I was in reduced power mode, I was still making power as per usual.
Checked the C-reader and didn't get a code. Checked with my dealer's diagnostics the next day and found nothing that could have caused the CEL. I haven't had a CEL since flashing to v1.47.. and it's been months. |

i've got that "Engine Malfunction, Reduced Power!" warning light with the picture of an engine thats half colored in......i guess if thats "limp mode" then i've had it happen to me completely at random and even at times where im driving normally, had it happen about 4 times now over the course of 7 months. And I never lost power either, the first time it happened was within the first week or two i had the car, i paniced and pulled over, called bmw assit hoping for an answer but later learned that restarting the car would fix it. THOUGH, I am still bothered by what on earth is causing this ocassional CEL. I havent had any software until tonight so this was all on a stock engine, plus cat back exhuast.

I thought that there was a safety that won't allow you to kill the motor at speed?? I used to turn off/on my 911 all the time at speed when I would throw a code from overrunning the TC system (I would forget to turn it off). But I thought the BMW won't let you do that. I guess I'll have to try.

Here too, only once. V1.47
I was 100 miles into a 150 mile trip and the yellow engine thing pops up. Still had full power. So I hit the button on end of the turn signal stalk and the symbol goes away! 30 seconds later it comes back. I repeat this a few times and the symbol stays gone. Happened on the way back too. Same deal, different gas. Weird..... One of those so called "soft codes"? Must be really soft if I can clear it with the info button. |

The car won't turn on or off at those speeds...In fact the car won't turn on or off unless it's close to a complete stop (or a slight roll if you have a 6MT)
If you don't believe me....try it...won't work.

This is dangerous but it is not as scary as you guys think if the car is MT.
There is actually one of many crazy ways people think of in conserving gas, not in this case, of course. Quote:

Yea I dont know, call me conservative but, something about turning the car off when Im doing 130 just doesnt sound like good idea to me, But then again, never tried it.

Can't restart while rolling with an AT though
![]() I wonder what's the difference between people who get limp mode but claim it goes away w/o restarting, and those that have to restart just to make it go away ![]()

Turning off at that speed, of course, is stupid because your brake boosting goes away. But I had to test it. ![]() |
