335i Questions

Hey all,

New to the board - I posted this in another section but wasn't getting any hits. I was hoping someone on this side of the house could help out.

A buddy of mine recently purchased an 07 E92 4dr with the paddle shifter option sport kit etc.. We talk a lot about what the E92 motor can handle and what mods are out there as well as what he can do to his baby without destroying it. I had a few questions about the E92, modifications, and the engine and was hoping someone could shed some light on them.

I don't have much experience with German motors other than a VW Jetta 2.0 engine that managed to go 90MPH for 30mins without coolant because the radiator had bullet hole through it (long story), so please forgive the ignorance.

I read through the tech pdfs in regards to the motor having cast iron internals and was wondering if anyone had any more details as to how much HP the stock internals can take without needing to be beefed up. I estimate a 450-500RWHP max with the current cast iron block but please let me know if I am wrong as I am very curious.

I have read of a few ECU upgrades, one is the procede stage II which claims to increase the HP to 400+ to the wheels. I am assuming that this is done primarily with an increase in boost (assuming that other air/fuel mixture, spark, fuel pressure, timing, etc.. have been enhanced as well). Has anyone had or read anything on wether the stock injectors, fuel pump etc.. can handle the load? The other is an upgrade that BMW will be putting out soon, but I haven't found any info on.

Usually an increase like that on any other car would require some upgrades to avoid detonation. I realize that BMW may have kept the E92 civilized so it wouldn't step on the current M3's toes but have they really included all the goodies for you Bimmer guys and gals to enjoy?

Next, what mods are recommended to an otherwise bone stock E92. I believe the first mods on the list were a set of M6 replicas and some H&R springs with the front and rear sway bars to match. In my opinion Dampers should definitely go on with the springs to avoid double labor costs but the springs and the sways should still provide a great improvement in overall handling. Would you all recommend the Cold Air intake next, or the full exhaust kit? If the exhaust is preferred, how big should the pipes be?

Lastly, can anyone recommend some reputable BMW performance shops in the SFL:West Palm Beach, Ft. Lauderdale area?

Sorry for all of the questions, but thanks for taking the time to read through...

Too early to tell, even people on the fore front of performance mods haven't reached over 400rwhp yet. Well, maybe there are, but I haven't seen any information on it yet.

Not sure where you got your information, but the Vishnu Procede v2.0 with catback exhaust is putting down around ~360 rwhp on 91 octane, and ~370 rwhp on 93 octane, not 400. Yes, boost is increased over stock, and maps for A/F, timing etc are also adjusted as well. As for being able to handle this load, it seems to be fine. A few people, myself included have been running the v2.0 beta for a few months now without any issues. Here is a dyno run by Shiv on 91 octane, there’s another dyno sheet with 93 octane in a thread somewhere.

There has been posts about an upgrade from BMW, but this has not been validated. Its pure speculation at this point. There are a few other options for tuning, I won't go through all the different information but here are some key words you can search on if you want further information:

Procede
AA Xede
RD Blackbox
Split Second Turbo Tuner
Dinan

I agree that the engine probably wasn't tuned from the factory at its maximum capacity, whether this was for marketing reasons or reliability ones who knows. So while it seems like a large jump over stock, I'm hoping that due to the type of engineering BMW is known for, we are within the threshold for this engine. As for early detonation, I haven't heard of anyone having issues with this as of yet (I don't think anyone has blown an engine yet). Again, we are still in the early stages of this car, and won't be able to validate it till people really start pushing the envelope. My estimation is inline with what you are thinking, pure speculation but I think the threshold for this engine will be somewhere 430rwhp-450rwhp on stock internals. However, I really don't think we will see much more than 400rwhp with the stock turbos anyway.

From previous experience, I will never do just springs on my car. Others feel that it is sufficient, but its a personal call. I went the KWv2 route with H&R sways, I am extremely happy with the combo. Out of these two, I would say the sways made the bigger difference in over all handling. There are multiple threads on exhaust sizing for this car just do a search and you will find a plethora of information on it, including the highly debated and comical "X pipe or no X pipe".

On a side note, if your buddy has a sedan then he has an E90, not an E92. E92's are coupes.

Thanks for the info fellas.
The 335i is incredibly impressive and a hoot to drive even with the paddle shifters. (We beat up a bit on my buddy's 335i when it had 143 miles - loads of fun)
I still prefer my 08 mustang GT but for someone looking for a luxury sports car this would definitely be my first choice.
