Have I inadvertently made my service light come on?

Hi,

Just before my MOT was due last month the roadworthiness test icon was showing with the exclamation mark when I started my e90 330D. There was nothing other than that pending at the time when I cycled through the various icons.

When it was MOTd by my local garage they did not reset the indicator so I followed some instructions from the internet and did it myself. Now I'm not sure if I've done something as after I had reset it I noticed that the "car on the ramp" icon was showing amber at startup (no exclamation mark).

I thought it might be something I'd done and left it for a few days. Now it's turned red and when I look the "car on a ramp" by cycling through the service items it has a -50 next to it. The manual says that that icon is a service indicator but I don't understand what it's asking me to service or what I missed 50 miles ago? Unless I've inadvertently done something trying to reset the roadworthiness icon?!

Any ideas? I think I can reset this particular icon but if I'm meant to take it in for something then I'd rather follow it!

Thanks

Dan

Check all other service icons and see what is due?

No, nothing else is due. Can the car on a lift icon come on independently?

Could it be your statutory service i.e.. MOT indicator? You can change the date of this yourself so that it aligns with the day your MOT is due. Perhaps you have set the date wrong? You need to set it to when your next MOT is due.

Can you not get a text description of the service item due from your menu/screen?

There is a 'vehicle inspection' service item every 2 years or 36k IIRC, so it often coincides with MOTs at 4 or 6 years old.

It's just a check over that BMW any indy can do in 1/4 hour, usually you'd combine it with another service item.

It just said SERVICE above it.

Interestingly, in the past two days it is still showing this symbol with an ever increasing negative mileage, however, when I now cycle through the symbols the car on ramps is the only symbol showing in red. I guess that's it then although the behaviour is odd as I don't understand why the symbol should suddenly change and why the symbol displayed on ignition does not match the service item! I'll take it in and see what they say....
