Fire hazzard?
I currently have the cigarette lighter instead of the sunglass holder.
I was thinking about doing something like this But using the cigarette lighter to power the garmin as opposed to an actual hardwire. Would it be a fire hazzard if I just plug it in and shove it into the console somewhere? Maybe shrink wrap or tape it so it doesn't come loose? Any ideas? Link to member DIY for that mod. http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=660556 EDIT: Also, does anyone know what that tray part number is?

I guess I'm not really sure what you're going for? Plug it into the cigarette lighter then... mount the garmin somewhere on the console? But run the wire hidden through the console?
Anyway, no, it shouldn't be a fire hazard at all. But if I were you, I'd totally just do that exact hardwire you linked.

No, that should be fine. I WOULD give the socket + adapter pair a good wrap or two of electrical tape just to prevent them coming apart- the cigarette lighter isn't the most vibration proof connection in the world. Or better yet, get a heavy piece of heat shrink - should hold better and also comes off cleaner with no gunk later. But my biggest concern would be space - I don't know if the socket comes out of that trim piece or if it's molded in, etc. Fire and sparking is a pretty low concern, though. |
