Remus Racing sound too loud (added video)
Guys,
I just got my E93 335i installed with Remus Racing Quad mufflers and really like the way they look together with the carbon Duke Dynamics diffuser. Also the sound is great when accelerating! However, what I don't really like (and especially my wife doesn't like) is the sound when starting the car cold. If that happens in a large garage (at my wife's work), the sound is sooo loud that everyone turns to look... The car has also downpipes (installed by the previous owner) and I know that he had removed the exhaust flaps as well but I understood these flaps were at the old mufflers so I guess they could not be brought back. In addition, if trying to drive normally, especially uphill with a low gear, the sound is a bit too much... I need to drive a big hill just next to my house so the neighbors will hear me leaving every morning... Would anyone be able to recommend any way to quiet the thing a bit; especially the cold sound on startup? Is there any way to have the flap as an additional accessory etc? Else, I might need to install the front cats back hoping that would reduce the sound a bit... (but not yet for the summer - need to enjoy the sounds when the roof comes down). Any recommendations would be great as I'd like to have the mufflers but still my wife being able to use the car as well.. Last edited by BimmerFinn; 04-13-2013 at 07:46 AM.. |

I have had the same with DP's and BMW PE. I added an resonator in the mix.
Downside: It also lowers you acceleration sound Pro: Less noise while starting cold. I'm considering the go back to factory with my mufflers as both the PE and the 335IS mufflers are still to loud for parking lots hahaha.

Resonator <> DP cats.
Cats lead to performance degradation, resonators are not intrusive in terms of performance but do filter high freq sound and rasp out of the exhaust note. I would describe my former DP, resonator and PE combo sound as something that tends to lean to a V8 sound, deeper and heavier and less crying (unfortunately). The resonator installation and purchase was about 300,-... although not much space to have the resonator's positioned below the car.

Thanks guys for your quick replies!
I'm really hesitant what to do as the sound is a bit loud for a family car but then I'm saying that hey, its a 400hp family car... Anyways, perhaps the resonators would help a bit; I could have the quad looks but at the same time, a less intrusive sound (for the wife and neighbors). Could anyone recommend what to buy and where? If its 300,- installed, I could always try it to see if that helps! Rismo, you seemed to be in Europe as I am. Where did you get yours?

Installing the stock downpipes with cats will help overall. But the car will still be very loud on startup. Resonators will help some, but it will still be loud on startup. I bought a 335 w/ catless DP's and an Eisenmann exhaust. It was so loud on startup it set off car alarms in my parking deck and was a little embarassing. Sounded great while accelerating though. I ended up removing the catless DP's and reinstalling the stock downpipes. It's much quieter while driving, but on cold start is still very, very loud until it warms up. I would say that putting stock DP's in only reduced cold start volume by 10%.

How long has it been installed? If it's loud then it's loud, but after a week or two I noticed that, while still loud, the sound of my straight pipe exhaust got kind of richer/warmer and less raspy/rattlely. Loud yes, but not nearly as ricey as it sounded the first few days...

Its been there only a week now. Lets see if the loudest noises would come down...
It was ok but I wanted a bit more metallic sound when in full acceleration. I also love the looks of the Remus Racing with some carbon on it and therefore decided to go with Racing instead of Remus Sports... I made a quick video of the start up sound on the morning when starting the car at 0'C (32'F). Sorry for the very dirty car as its been raining a lot for several days now while waiting the spring to finally start.... Need to see if I could get some resonators installed! Does that affect mainly the highest sounds? How about the lowest sounds when going up a hill with just moderate acceleration and low RPM?

Resonators wont really make it quieter on cold starts. It will help a bit, but its mostly just for rasp.
Maybe tryadding a highflow mid muffler (2 inlets 2 outlets) |

It sounds exactly like my remus. I agree with ^^^, I don't think resonators will help with cold starts. I love the way it sounds and honestly, I've heard much loud exhausts. Good luck tho!

Still asking a bit of help; did a 400 mile weekend drive with the family and whenever there was even a smaller hill, I had to always change automatic transmission to sport in order to increase the RPM over 2000RPM. The sound is just too loud for the family at less than 2000RPM and accelerating even a little...
I'm supposed to be doing over 10k KM / 6000 mile summer tour with the car in a month and if I cannot figure out any other way, I just have to bring the original mufflers back... Any advice of what kind of resonators etc to be installed before I need to sell the Remus? Ps. I love the sound of Remus Racing when driving alone and accelerating at full throttle! Would really love to keep them!

Is the car running a tune? I'm surprised no one has advised you to adjust the default wastegate position. It makes a world of a difference in how loud the exhaust is.

Find an exhaust baffle. They insert into the tips. Remove them when you want to go driving by yourself.

I'm also now looking into Vibrant resonators but it seems to help mainly for the rasp whereas I'm really looking to quite the drone...
