Need a favour from the Forum...Help!

Hi All,

I need to ask a favour - my 335i has quite severe wastegate rattle and I want to take it BMW for a goodwill resture repair as I have read they are willing to do.

My predicament is I purchased my car with BMS Dual Cone Intakes - and Im 99% sure BMW will start pointing fingers when they get the car, so I need a stock airbox.

I have been calling around all the breakers and I haven't found one that has one. Buying one brand new is £350+.

Here is where the forum comes in - before I drop a stupid and needless amount on a brand new one does anyone have a stock airbox lying around in their garage (possibly after installing Cone Intakes) that I could please borrow? I have an air filter so that isnt a problem. I actually have half an airbox without the lid to make things more simple I could just borrow the lid.

I am based in Enfield, North London. I will buy a 12 pack to say thanks if anyone comes through!

Many thanks.

Really? I thought they carried out goodwill gestures up to 8 years/82,000 miles?

Let me know how you get on with the indy adjusting your actuators, as I've heard its very hard to do e.t.c.

You guys are right...my car is in at the local dealership at the moment for cracked alloy and I asked regarding the actuators. They told me to do one.

My car is out of warranty but was thinking if its worth buying BMW warranty for a year. I got an online quote and the cheapest was Driveline Component Cover. For one year it was £414 with £100 excess...expensive but makes sense if new turbos cost £2000.

Also need to change the headlight washer pump and the low fuel pressure sensor.

I've not seen the turbo's on a 335i but I still don't understand why the whole turbo needs replacing if it's just the waste gate actuators which fail. Surely any decent turbo refurbishment firm worth their salt should have been able to come up with an easier fix for this by now unless I am missing something very obvious.

That still wouldn't stop a decent turbo firm from fixing or upgrading them. You can even bypass them completely and fit an external wastegate. They've been doing it on Japanese cars turbos for years. Just surprised no one has come up with a cheaper\better option by now then just replacing the whole turbo unit.

In fact I've just found a few links which suggest that there might be a fix for this now. Might be a cheaper\better way to go for those who suffer from the wastegate issue outside of warranty.

http://www.bimmerforums.co.uk/forum/...em-fix-t97328/

And a firm who do repairs of this kind too. I've used them before on one of my previous cars and they were very good.

Thanks for the info. Does anyone know of anyone who has used Turbo Developments & Engineering?

I totally agree. I was shocked to find out that the wastegates and turbos were a single unit!
My civic turbo a few moons ago had separate wategates... I didn't know you could get units which were combined.

But it is tight down that side of the n54 engine bay...

I spoke to 'Turbo Developments + Engineering'...their prices are a bit different from that original thread. They offer two options:

Actuator rattle fixed + Re-furbished turbos - £550 per turbo, on an exchange basis

or

Actuator rattle fixed - £250 per turbo.

Naturally this doesnt include any labour removing/fitting the turbos and if you just wanted the actuator rattle fixed their typical turn around is 1 week.

Hmm seems about right price wise but I'd shop around at some of the other turbo companies too. How does that compare to getting the price of getting the turbo's replaced, I've heard quotes of £2k plus which if true would seem reasonable. Also have BMW released a newer version of the turbo's which don't have this weakness any more or can this problem occur again?
