Probably a dumb question... mileage to service

When I start up my car it says 'mls 19000'.
Does that mean I have to bring my car in for the first service when it has 19000 miles on it?
I thought that the first service was at 15000 miles?

Well mine doesn't change. It's always said 19000 and hasn't budged. Is that bad?

about 370 miles on it. Either way, it shouldn't be 19000 right? It should be 15000?

On my car it didnot show the countdown miles for service, instead, it show the service date, and that symbol is not any where in the manual. Any one have any idea what that symbol is???

There are no stupid questions - only stupid people. Just kidding!

Nikki, since you have so few miles on your car that number will stay high for quite awhile. My understanding is that the number you see is "miles until service". Now we know why BMW offers free maintenance for 50,000 miles... the first oil change won't be due until 50,002.

that's telling you to have brake fluid changed at that date

i think that the miles to service reflects how you drive the car. since you havent really had opportunity to drive it a lot i would imagine that your service date would be a little longer.

for instance, longtran says he is due for service at 14500 rather than the 15000 and he drives his car like there is no tomorrow.

i wouldnt worry about it. concentrate on more important things like how to open your gas cap and trunk

I would not be too concern with it. your car is far more sohisticated than you think. 1) 19000 is correct. 2) it has not budged because you have not driven it that much. 3) Your oil service also depends on your driving style (high rev, stop and go traffics). If you start driving it more regularly, it will change. On my car, I have driven 10000 miles and the indicator is showing 9000 miles. This is normal because i drive like an old lady and longtran drive like michael schumacher. Plus, you are still in your break in period so it good to take it easy on your car for now.

If you still do not know what that symbol means, I think it best to give the dealer a visit. Sometimes, dealer are clueless but maybe they might know what that icon means.

As Ward says, that light is for your brake fluid. See page 55 of the non-drive .pdf manual on this site, or the one that came with your car.

Interesting, thanks for the replies everyone.
So I guess that it will go down eventually,it just changes on an interval, not continous basis, right?
And even if it says that I have so many miles until service, will it tell me to change my oil once a year has passed if I have not yet reached that mileage?

My Car also had 19,000 miles till service.
Every 1,000 miles I drove it dropped by 1,000.
I had dealer reset it to 15,000 & now counting down correct.
Dealers are suppose to set all cars 15,000 not 19,000

i believe you're on your own to remember the 1 year service, dealers will do it, but prefer if people forget

Nikki, also my time to service interval didn't change at all till I had 3-4 thousand miles on the clock

Just a tidbit of info.

On the E46, the computer estimates miles to oil change by counting down from 666 litres of gas consumed. I assume this is still the same for the E90.

So, if you really want to get the oil change sooner, either you drive it more, or drive it like you stole it!
