BMW-ConnectedDrive is cool
Had a play around today with the bmw-assist or connecteddrive feature in the car. Tis a bit gadgety but it does seem to work well.
1 Went to google maps first and sent a couple of addresses to the car. 2 Went out to the car and then retrieved them thru the Communication -> BMW Assist -> My Info. They took a while to come down but seemed to work fine. You can then navigate to the received location. 3 I also went to the 'New Query' section in 'Info Services' and it uses the inbuilt sim-card (I know because my phone was not in the car at the time) and dials up the BMW info+ hotline. You then just speak to someone and they can send you any business address you want to the sat nav system. This last feature would be very useful if you could not be bothered to go into the information services section of the navigation. Would also be a lot safer if you are driving at the time. May as well make use of it since we are paying for it anyway

I have been sent the BMW Assist form to complete. Was thinking of not bothering to activate the facility for the free six months period as there is no way I am going to pay £300 for the annual subscription thereafter. However, it sounds as if it is a gadget worth having even for a short period!

I misread that also Peter - it isn't £300 it is £120. The £300 is for the "BMW Online" I believe.....

I had my V5 back from DVLA on the 31 August (so have my chassis number) The car was registered on the 1 st Sept! The dealer was clearly on top of his paperwork.
Does the dealer have to endorse the form or can I leave the dealer section blank? |

In my case I got home from collecting the car to find the V5 had landed on the doormat whilst I was getting it.

I just left it blank thinking this was probably if they were setting it up on a demonstrator as there is a tick box for that.

I sent my form off today.
I have to say, the google maps stuff is cool. But I also read that you can in theory send other 'online' map info to your bmw address (such as Map24 - now that's one cool mapping site) Also, it stated on the website that you can use pop3 or imap and have your own email sent to your car - has anyone tried this yet? I have a googlemail account & a work webmail that would be great to access from the car. regards B |

It's a shame specific route information can't yet be sent & used by the Nav. Perhaps after a future Progman update. Viv |

You could probably then send a formatted sms message to it for a navigation location.

I noticed in another thread that you have said assist & online is free. also, smeone else stated that you had to have opted for online when you bought your car. I don't remember being asked for either, but I did get the telematics pack with my Nav Pro. Any idea what i'm entitled too? thanks B |

What is the difference between Telematics and Assist? I am sending off the Assist forms this weekend (having received them through the post straight from BMW UK). Is there something else that needs to be done to activate Telematics?

It would appear that Telematics is the technology name for all the car's communications functions (assist, online, sos, etc)
See this link 'Assist' and 'Online' are just sub-systems of Telematics.

Is that a feeling that you are not used to?

I think you are beyond help ?
Basically Assist is the package whereby you can i) Press the SOS button in your car and be connected to emergency assistance, ii) Get concierge type help i.e. "Where's my nearest petrol station" and iii) Now get addresses sent to your car nav via google maps. The other service (Online?) is for texting/emailing/surfing from the car. That what you are asking?
