Nav File Questions...
Here is what I have done so far:
downloaded: BMW_CIC_NAVIGATION_NORTH_AMERICA_2013/ which was about 15.7 GB, put pkgdb and config.nfm in USB root and plugged that into my USB in glove box...nothing happened. next I downloaded: v.2013_NA_PREMIUM_CIC_USB (23) .RAR files I am going to put those on the USB with the hope that this will work Why could I not read BMW_CIC_NAVIGATION_NORTH_AMERICA_2013 when I plugged the USB drive into the car? ALSO, WHAT DO I DO WITH THOSE (23) .rar FILES ONCE THEY ARE DOWNLOADED? WHAT DO i PUT ON THE USB DRIVE? |

Thank you for the reply. Not to questing your expertise, but I read that multiple people that had their car manufactured 4/2009 and 6/2009 were able to upgrade their maps with the USB...why do you think I can't?
Also one of the map downloads was only 15.4 GB The other one was like 21.2 I never tried updating with the USB with the larger file set. I only tried with the 15.4GB and I am thinking it was not complete and maybe just maybe that is why it did not work What are your thoughts please |

I checked the firmware version and this was the message:
Software update with BMW ConnectedDrive. You are running the latest software. There is no software update available. To perform the software update via USB stick, you will require the USB audio interface (included in optional equipment codes 6FL, 6NK or 6NL) as well as the Control Display and iDrive. This offer is only available for selected vehicles manufactured after March 2010. Your vehicle can be updated provided that you have the ‘Software update’ option on your ‘Settings’ menu in the Control Display So if I have the latest firmware...I am assuming the download was bad |

Think of it this way, All M/Y 2009 vehicles shipped with iDrive software 1.0 installed (not really 1.0 but a simplistic example). BMW released iDrive software 1.5 in 2010 which added the ability to update maps via USB. In order to get this ability, it required the dealership to install the update on the car. Usually BMW only installs updates on a car when it's needed for service or some problem. Basically, those people took their car in for service, or for a problem which required them to update all the software on the car, installing the 1.5 update along with it. So they now have the ability to update via USB. You can either have your dealership update your software (tell your SA that you bought the new maps and can't load them via USB). If you are lucky, they'll update your software for free. Otherwise you can find a coder with good equipment or an independent shop to update your car, than you can load the USB. |

Here's a quick test: go to the Nav map screen. Look at the gray Info box in the upper right. Press your iDrive controller knob. If the info box doesn't go away, you have the old software and you can redownload the torrent until you're LeMans Blue in the face with no success. (BTW, the above was covered in the thread I've pointed you to three times now.) |

I am at work..I don't have time to read 17 pages of threads. It would be faster if you could answer the simple question instead of telling me over and over to look in a 17 page thread. Thank you

Short version is you’ll need to figure out how to span a 22GB file tree across 4GB DVDs including which files go on which DVD. I’ve yet to read of anyone being successful. 2012 and earlier updates came with ISO images so it was easy. 2013 update comes only as USB stick containing the aforementioned file tree. (if you have a bunch of RAR files you’ll need to run them through WinRAR or similar to extract the 22GB file tree) Yet you want other people to donate their time to you answering questions you won’t search for yourself? |

Updating the iDrive software is not user updatable. It has to be done with ISTA or WinKFP. |

My info box goes away when I view Map and I press idrive controller knob
I forgot to mention that my CIC head unit was replaced a month ago and it states in the service papers that they connected battery charger and "coded cic to vehicle" So, I am now assuming I have the most up to date firmware |

I contacted the dealer and here is what he said...
"For your production date vehicle the only way to update the navigation is to replace the disk with 2013. As far as updating the firmware, your vehicle has the latest version" My car build date was 09/2009 So, here is the order of events... as I was driving down the streets the maps would not show accurately where the car was, brought car to dealer, they replaced the CIC headunit and re-programmed, then when I started the car it said enter code to start navigation... Brought car back to dealer...it was there all day like 8 hrs and during that time they did not update the maps because they still say 2009, so they must have updated ECU, so I just dont know why I can't read the maps off the USB... USB slot broken possibly?? OR is dealer telling me accurate information and I can only update via DVD eventhough I have the latest firmware and my car was made 09/2009 Thoughts? You have to be able to update via USB. There is no DVD part number for 2013 maps.

Well FINALLY got my car to update via USB.
If you have problems get a Sandisk 32gb Cruzer Flsh Drive and install from that, if that does not work, then your firmware is out of date. Everyone here told me that my firmware was out of date and it was really the USB drive I was using the whole time.. None the less, thank you for all your assistance |
