Question about M Performance Steering Wheel
I was watching this video about the performance steering which was getting me all pumped and ready to pull the trigger but had two real quick questions for those that have it.
Is there anyway to shut the LED shift lights completely off? Also, do they dim along with the rest of the instrument cluster at night. Let's just put it this way. I don't need another excuse for the cops in my neighborhood to bug me…LOL |

Call me crazy, but if you don't want to use the leds then whats the point in the performance steering wheel in the first place.

It's OEM equipment. If it wasn't "street legal" pretty sure BMW wouldn't approve it for use with their cars.
Maybe refrain from whatever other activities that cause said undesired popo attention in the first place? Are you one of those fellas sporting red or blue angels? |

You can drive around with the electronic displays off. Those little hidden buttons at the 10 and 2 o'clock are what turn it on and off. As for the dimming, I dunno I kind of doubt that it dims but if the factory lighted portions of the stock wheel dim then maybe this one does to.

You definitely turn the wheel on from those buttons. Watch any demo video. I think the Performance wheel is a novelty that would get old real quick. Do you really need a bunch of hysterical lights telling you when to shift?

i doubt a cop will give you much trouble for having lights on your steering wheel. all of our steering wheels have LED controls for audio/phone etc anyway

Don't think you really need the m-performance upgrade unless you're on the tracks often, which can be beneficial. Ever cleaned and maintained alcantara? Not fun.
Wanna get a worthwhile upgrade? Get an m-sport steering wheel. Best mod I ever did!

The wheel can be dimmed, it's in the options for it. If you don't want the LED flashing on revs, you can set it higher than what the car's RPM red line at. When you're pulled over, only the small LED window is on, it's not bright, second it turns off after a bit. The LED for revs will go away after 5 seconds also if no action is taken.

True dat! Did your car come with the m-sport or did you just swap it? Curious because your profile only read "sport."

Can you confirm something for me? Is there actually difference (other than the perforations) between the M-sport wheel and the regular sports wheel? Is the M-sport / M3 wheel appreciably fatter etc?

Some say there is a slight difference in size between the m-sport and //m steering wheel but I just think the difference between the two is the perforation on the m-sport and stitching on the //m.
