Front license plate Y or N
you guys get any heat from the cops about rolling with no front license plate?
I want to take mine off because it looks SO much cleaner, but I wanted to see what you all thought.

where in the bay do you live? sf you will get shit, fremont you will get shit, sj you probably will as well, Cupertino will as well, the only places you can get away without a plate really is like Oakland or Hayward.. lol

I am in Fremont most of the time. No problems. Cops see me coming and don't give me any hassle. *knock on wood*

Went for a whole year with no front license plate, drove all over the place from Daly City, San Bruno, San Francisco, Petaluma, Santa Rosa, etc. Most cops won't care, just the asshole ones who don't have anything better to do will pull you over.
In my year of having no front license plate I only had 2 cops pull me over for it, so I just said might as well put it on and take off my tints. I mean $50 in a year, keep adding that up everytime you get a fix it ticket. |

You most likely will not get pulled over for it. But if you ever park on the street where parking is enforced (eg meters or time restricted zones), you have a very high chance of getting a ticket from parking enforcement.

I do, I ran no front plate in socal for 4 years in college and now 2 years (currently live in oc) but when I was living in fremont I ran plateless for a few weeks and got pulled over, if I recall correctly I was pulled over 3 times in fremont and finally gave up and slapped the plate on, I mean I was much younger when this happened so maybe that played a factor? I know it's pretty bad in sf though, I've had a few friends who got ticketed while their car was PARKED in sf, but it's all the luck of the draw I guess!

I'm in Sacramento and had to deal with this recently because I swapped out my front bumper and didn't want to drill holes in the new one. So I decided to go plateless, although I DID buy a tow hook mount from US Millworks just in case I get too much crap or need to drive/park in different areas.
Ultimately what made me decide to go without was looking at all oncoming traffic everywhere I went. About 1 or 2 in 10 cars would have no plate. I figured they can't all be getting pulled over. My worst fear isn't getting a fix it ticket for the plate really. It's getting pulled over for the plate and getting a ticket for my tint. If I have to pull that off and re-do it I'm gonna be upset!

I went without for a couple of years. Eventually got pulled over and got cited for tints. Those are expensive to "replace", or you just pay the fine. Either way it co$t$.
Finally decided to put the front plate back on - yes I like my car without the front plate, but it's not worth the hassle. Some @$$hole local cop with nothing better to do will eventually tag you. My $0.02... |

Bay Area, roaming around mostly in SF and on Peninsula. Never any trouble, except for one cop who pulled me over for tints, told me to put it on but didn't cite it.

No plate is better, no doubt.
But imagine you DO get pulled over, you've had 1 too many beers, and a fix-it violation becomes a DUI. It's a small risk, to be sure. But not one I'm willing to take.

I've been rolling without plates around LA for 13 years. I've been twice cited for it when receiving a moving violation, once when receiving a parking ticket and was once pulled over solely based on the lack of the front plate. I've gone the past 5 years (knock on wood) without being pulled over or cited for no front plate. I have a trick that seems to be working... I keep the DMV temporary registration in lower right of the windshield.

Get a quick release plate for parking. I don't worry about it. One ticket for no plate in more than 10 years. Even when I got speeding tickets the plate or lack of was ignored. Now if you park in SF you want to have that plate on the front. They will write a ticket on a parked car for no front plate.

Hey Gilmore,
I was in your situation just last week. I decided to just get the front plate bc I didn't want to get pulled over but now i'm debating if i should put it on. I got the one from turner mortorsport Part #: B335ITHLP bc it said it contours to the car and is angled I just took some pictures today with it. Hope this helps either way. |
