Winter tires: what to get this year?
I'm going to order tires and rims for winter from tirerack.com, and I'm wondering what would be the best bet this year.
I'll need 17" run-flats. I appreciate dry winter performance - but NOT at cost of snow traction - I don't normally speed too much at winter anyways. In other words, snow traction is first priority. So, what rims and what tires? |

Dunlop M3's if you want to stay with runflats.

I used Dunlop Wintersport M3 in my STi for a few years, really like them. Lots of traction in snow and wet, and dry handling is very good for snow tires. So this time, I got the runflat version of these tires again for my 335. Just got them today from Tirerack

So, the consensus is to go with Dunlop. Now, should it be M3 or 3D (17" run-flats)? What's the difference?
Oh, yes, what rims? Something good, yet not too expensive. |

Where are you getting the rims from? I'm also looking for a set of M6 reps in 18" and thinking about getting them from US. If I can get it local, then that will be great.

My wheel and tire package cost me about $1500 US including shipping. When it came to me, another $380 CAD for duty, taxes and broker fee

if you can have them ship to a adress near the border, then go across to pick them up. That's what i do and save big them, no brokerage fee to pay.

Also, in the end, was it a better deal than buying locally? |

I have Dunlop Winter Sport 3Ds. They are great...but...keep in mind they are a Performance Winter Tire...which means they are designed to give excellent winter dry road traction at some compromise to the snow/ice traction.
If you want the ultimate snow traction, you can probably get even better snow traction from a traditional studless snow and ice tire, like the Blizzak REVO 1, Blizzak WS-60 or Michelin Primacy Alpin PA3. |

Me personally will stay with runflat for the winter simply because I don't want to deal with flat tires when it is -20C and slushy outside. With runflats I can keep driving until I get around to go to a tire shop to get replacement.
