Rusted brakes

Anyone else's brakes rusting up like this? Is it just an easy wirebrush/sand-blast fix? What do you use for preventive/treatment? Please advise, thanks!

The car has only driven by the beach ONE time months ago. Not sure why I'm getting this much 'rusty' build up though.

It's quite common, just use a wire brush to get it all off. Then get some rotor paint and paint over it.

Cast iron rotor/hubs will rust. Looks awful with rims that expose this. Other makes (Mercedes comes to mind) don't SEEM to have this issue when I look around in the parking lot, but all BMWs do. Check out this DIY:

Your brakes aren't rusting really, just your hubs which is fine.

I've seen people repaint them and they look better. But everyone's hubs rust no worries.

Most rotors come with a rust resist coating of some sort, but not actually paint. My stock rotors lasted 3 years without ever rusting as badly as yours have, but my new rotors looked much, much better. Anyway I just wirebrushed them and painted the hats matte black.

Anti-seize (basically breaks down the rust), a wire brush, and some steel wool fixed mine just fine.

You can get coated replacement rotors from Zimmerman.

My E39 experience - from the dealer sometimes you get painted/primed rotors and sometimes you don't The same might be true at the factory. They have multiple suppliers.

When doing a brake job make sure to at least prime the rotor hats before installing them. You can also shop for rotors that have been completed coated and baked like Zimmerman Coat-Z.

The exact same thing is happening with my car now. I took it to my SA and he told me that it is actually common, and there isn't any kind of replacement available for it. If you go to Lowe's or Home Depot, you can purchase a can of black bbq paint that is used to spray BBQ's and keep the coat safe with the high temperatures. BMW can spray them for you if you take it to them.

Does this really work-you don't have to remove the rust off first? Just spray and paint- how's does it turn out?

yes, but I used the version you paint on which is available at Ace or Home Depot. I also did sand a little b/c I was also a bit skeptical. That said, the hats did dry to a nice matt black finish and pretty flat, but I still painted them with oven 2000F oven paint.
