Smile 330d Manual Gearbox Oil Change Done (Oil Advice)

Hi guys,

Changed the oil in the 330d on Saturday. Went to BMW to get the gearbox oil and in BMW style they managed to supply me the wrong fluid . Unfortunately i had to use this fluid because i had already drained the old fluid. Even though there was a big sticker telling me what i needed!

Anyway, after reading lots of threads about the difference in MTF-LT2 and MTF-LT3 i decide to put that fluid in and get the correct stuff from BMW this week.

The oil that came out was very black, i can't see how this should never be changed! The reason i changed is that the gearbox felt a little stiff and not always smooth into gears. The new fluid, even though its not correct has made a difference and it feels a lot smoother.

I'm not sure if i should now change back to the LT2, i think i will for piece of mind, but its defiantly smoother now.

If anyone could actually tell me the difference in spec i would be grateful.

Few pictures of the change...

This is a very easy job (if you have access to a ramp), i allowed 2 hours for it to drain properly. I did put 1.7 liters back in after that.

Garage List
Just shows what a cr*p policy this 'lifetime fill' nonsense is on BMW's part. All down to the marketing people wanting to sell BMW as a 'low service cost' car. Which might be OK for the first owner, but good luck to anyone buying a used Beemer four or five years later...

The viscosity spec for the MT is 75W-80 and 75W-90 for the diff (which is also worth changing by the way).
