Confused and upset: 335i oil service interval

I need help and advice. I feel like such a....failure. I thought I was no pussy foot in my E932 335i, but after driving 15,000km over the past 9 months the "condition based" service indicator is telling me my first oil change won't be required till 31,000km.

Guys any suggestions what to do in this deeply embarassing situation?? I draw some comfort from the fact that I have managed to burn through 3 litres of oil so far, but that's no substitute for the potent reminder that greats me every time I check the on board service display... Clearly Nick needs to drive harder!!

Anyone else care to confide they've got a similar problem? Please, please tell me there's hordes of you out there that are zipping along to 40,000km+ before the first mandated oil change. (You can PM me if you feel the need to keep it quiet )

In all honestly I don't see how oil (even the long life non-dino stuff) can last that long. Personally I'd have someone change it every 10000km and just get BMW to reset the counter when it comes due. As long as you have the person doing the changes stamp your service book then it will show you have done the right thing.

Well my car is telling me I need oil service at 26K and I have 19K on it now. It's also telling me I needed front brakes at 14K but I still have a lot of meat left on them and the pad light has not come on. It's going into the dealer on Tues week to have the gearbox and engine ecu re-flashed so I'll get them to do an oil service as well.

I think you'll find the brake warning is to get the pads changed 14,000km from now, not at 14,000km. Mine too is showing 14,000km for front pads, but I take that to be 15,000km currently on odometer + 14,000km = 29,000km.

OK ... so let me understand here. I've got 19K on the clock now and as soon as I start the car, I get a indicator stating 14K. Does that mean I have 14K till the car is due in for a service?. If so, then I wont need oil till 45K..

Not meaning to hijack the thread but I'm interested to hear how to read the numbers. When I purchased the car, I was told the numbers displayed indicated "when" certain things needed doing and not "how many more" k's.

After checking both the i-drive readouts and the manual I'm pretty certain in all cases it's telling you how many km away you must perform the service function. It was after I looked into this that I decided to put this thread up to find out what others were experiencing. I think my weak attempt at humour has probably been lost but what I am saying is: I drive this car pretty hard and can't understand why the suggested first oil change is at such a ridiculously high km. I bet if you check i-drive it will show a big tick next to your oil and brake service, indicating that both are NOT due.....

The kilometers shown on the computer is a COUNTDOWN to when oil/ brakes etc are needing replacement. So if it shows 20,100kms, then it is not when your odometer reaches 20,1000kms but rather in 20,100kms time youll need something changed/ replaced.

Perhaps a calculator is in order?

19+14 does not = 45

Its a countdown, not a count up. At least thats how it is in my M3 and I imagine its a carry over in the 335 although I haven't paid too much attention. Thats how BMW have always done it, I doubt they would change now.

Thanks ... makes sense it's a countdown system.

The 19 (current) +14 (showing for brake pads)
19 + 26 (as showing for oil) = 45K

So I'll need front brake pads before oil service.

So in reference to the OP, Don't feel bad.... looks like I'm driving a lot softer than you but then again you have no choice in a 320. If I had a 335, I probably would have shredded a set of tryes by now. Don't you feel though that 3 liters or oil for 15,000K's is a little high!!

Um ... Yeah .... that might do it !!!!!!

Seriously -: Have you spoken to the service dept about what amount of oil consumption is considered acceptable because I would have thougth anything more than a litre per 10,000 is a little high regardless of your driving style.

From what I gather it seems 335's normally do guzzle a bit of oil, but you're right it's worth looking into further....

If I read that as 50% of the range that is being measured then that is only going to be half a litre. If you are going to do an intermediate oil change at say 15,000klms then i'd wait, if not then add a little bit at a time. I'm not sure how accurate the electronic gauge is compared to a regular dipstick. I live and breath electronic design and engineering every day however I'm still reserved on car electronics.
