Dealership only changing pads, not rotors.
My 2007 335i is still under the maintenance plan, meaning free replacement of brakes and rotors among other things.
I left my car at the dealership yesterday for them to look at the front brakes and a few other things. My SA called me back and said only the pads are out of specs while the rotors are at 28.7 vs 28.4 (I believe these were the numbers) I know for sure it was only .3 between ""in/out of specs". I remember reading BMW recommends changing rotors and pads at the same time. Does this only apply when the customer flips the bill and not when it's on BMW's dime? Or did I misunderstand it all? My car is at 69000 mi and according to my SA the front brakes have never been changed which to me seems strange considering the mileage. My CPO/maintenance plan expires in October, so should I just go out and brake the sh!t out of them to wear down the rotors before time is up? |

I have yet to hear of a dealer doing just the pads instead of both unless you are paying for it and want only the pads. |

I specifically mentioned this to the SA, but since the rotors were still within specs they would only do the pads. She said once the rotors wear down I would have to do both rotors and pads, which more than likely will be on my dime. FYI, the SA does seem to be quite knowledgeable and very friendly. Should I push for new rotors too before I pick it up? The dealerships is BMW Classic, Plano TX. |

Yeah push for it, i am looking on pads and rotors now here in San Antonio dealership and they quoted me 1400 for both. Push for it, and don't leave until they replace it with those parts. Unless you are willing to pay 400% mark up on dealership rotors later down the road.

I hardly drive my car, max 200-300 miles/month. If I decide to have the rotors changed in the next few months will it be ok to re-use the pads being put on now? They pads may have max 1000 miles on them by that time. |

Yes. Definitely push. The suggested approach is completely nonstandard for BMW's recommended maintenance of such items. If you were/are under the Maintenance Program, you paid for rotors _and_ pads, not just one or the other!

You can push all you want. They (dealerships) get paid by BMW for warranty and maintenance contract work ONLY if parts are returned. So when BMW does get back a set of rotors still within operating spec, the dealership is not going to get reimbursed for it.
While you say, c'mon, it's what, like 1/2 hour labor and $50 in parts, why won't they bend over backwards to accommodate? Well...Maybe if you're the SA's favorite client and you're eyeing that new M4 and have a deposit down already and are buying a new X3 for the wife will they eat that sort of cost. Still, they are under ZERO obligation to change out the rotor along with the pads.

^ this is true. Under free maintainence the dealer will measure the rotor and only replace if it's out of spec. If u are paying out of pocket they will say pads and rotos must be replaced at the same time.

^ wow!!! Why do they insist that the rotors be changed no matter what when you change the pads but now, they don't anymore. I'm in Canada and we have to pay for the brakes and usually they insist that the rotors are changed with the pads. It's been the case for past 12 years of ownership of various BMWs.

dealerships will only change the rotors if they measure below or are right at the minimum thickness.
