Indy Shop coilover installment
Okay, so today i visited the most reliable tire shop in my town and indy shop that specialize work on BMW. The tire shop is where ive taken my cars for tires and where i got my wheels from and the indy shop ive only taken to them to install my PE exhaust.
The indy shop says he can do it for $470 + alignment. The tire shop said $400 at the most($50 dollar each side, adjustment, and alignment). So basically everything. Dilemma: I feel like the indy shop is charging me way too damn much, but they have the experience of working on BMW that the tire don't have. The tire shop has reasonable price since he said $400 at the most, but i feel like they dont have the experience of working on BMW everyday like the indy shop has. I'm leaning towards the tire shop. So, if you guys were in my situation would you go to the indy or tire shop for coilovers installment? BTW, since you're wondering i order St coils. UPDATE: So i went to the indy shop today to get my St coils install. I paid $400 at the indy shop, you guys think its too much? They did a good job, but it took 4 hours(11am-3pm). When should i go get a alignment? Ive notice it learns towards the driver side a little bit. Way stiffer and it seems like my car got smaller.lol St coilovers: Last edited by DZheng; 08-21-2013 at 03:49 AM.. |

If I was in your situation, I would DIY and take my car to the dealer for an alignment. Suspension work doesn't really require "bmw knowledge" I would take it to the tire shop, let them do the install, and take it to the dealer for an alignment.

Most shade tree mechanics would be able to do this job, it's super simple. The thing which makes it easier is if you have a lift to put the car on rather then jack stands. Lots of specialty places would normally do the install @ about $50 a corner = $200 and about $100 for corner weight & alignment. So the average price for this job should be about $300 (More than that and you are being taken for a ride). I would contact the coil over manufacturer and get the installation instructions in PDF format (in email). Then look it over yourself... get educated on what is involved so you can sound knowledgeable and most shops should give you a better deal cuz you can shoot the sh1t with them on shop talk. Even after the coilovers are installed, do you have any idea how to dial in the settings you will want? They won't get it right the first time... will they charge you to keep adjusting the compression/rebound or will they show you how to do it? Would the rear coilover adjustments even be accessible to you without having to take everything apart (Have they discussed any strategy for how to make the rears easy to adjust/accessible)?? - Faz |

Yes, I know how to install coilovers. Just dont have a lift and dont wanna do it on the ground. As far as rear coilover. E90, and E92 dont have rear coilovers. The spring sit on the control arm. Yes, i know how low of a drop i want about 1 and a quarter inch drop(1" 1/4"). thanks

Skimping on the install is a mistake. I'd not entrust my car to a shop where I had a single doubt about the work to be performed.
There are many threads on this forum complaining about nuances after a suspension install - steering wheel off, lights on the dash, &c. Inexperienced mechanics, in other words. If the Indy shop you're looking at has experience with BMW's, that is worth something; I think it's worth the difference.
