Wishing for a Hard Drive-Based Audio System

Well I am not going to list other car manufacturers that already have this but I sure wish BMW will one day offer a hard drive based audio system that will store or rip your music. USB and iPod adapters are nice, less maintenance but having a hard drive will sure be nice some days.

Plug a hard drive/flash stick into the USB port. It's not that hard. You just need to find a drive that's:

1. Relatively low power.
2. Can take the vibration and temperature environment of the car.
3. Has the amount of storage you want.
4. Can physically fit in the armrest.

For me, a 16GB flash stick is enough. Others want more space and get something bigger.

+1 USB flash drives are getting bigger all the time! Very quickly you won't need a hard drive based system. I just wish there was a USB retro-fit because it was available when I got mine.

I don't see the point. Why would you want to re-rip your music to your car when it's already on your ipod? it'd just be another repository to maintain.

Exactly.

I plug an 80GB Iomega USB bus-powered hard drive into my car and it works great. Even fits in the ipod sleeve attached to the underside of the center console.

Here are pics if anyone cares:
