You can buy the 3k extended warranty at anytime and from any dealer right? So it tacks on an additional 50k miles of coverage?

Curious, can you get a 4th free oil change? Or is it like a dental benefit, each one must be exactly 6 mos. or longer (with the oil 1 yr.), so it would expire before you can get the 4th year?

Say you bought the car Jan. 1 2006

so you get oil changed Jan. 1 2007, 2008, 2009, and whoops, 2010 is 4 years and 1 day, so no free oil change. Is it like that? Like I said, if a dental plan, you would not be able to get a 4th oil change free.

If you want a warranty make sure you get a BMW one. We dont sell any other brand here because you will somehow not get covered. Its a tough choice but if you drive a lot of miles and will reach 100k before the time frame is up on the warranty then I say its worth it. If not then forget it.

I got an extended maintenance plan, but not extended warranty. I feel like that's more useful to me.

Me too. But now im starting to think the maintenance plan was a waist too. I think all I will get is two more oil changes, an other break fluid and antifreeze change.

I think it's worth it (for me at least) since I've been through a set of rear pads, fronts are coming up in like 7k miles, and I'll probably go through both again (maybe a third set) before reaching 100k (I'm at 33k right now). That in addition to oil changes (second covered one coming up soon). Maybe I brake too much..

What did you use during your first maintenance plan?

How much do you think that would've cost you without the maintenance plan?

Also, is it every time you go through them they replace them? Or does it have to be scheduled?

Two oil changes, a break fluid flush and antifreeze change.
I average 30 Mpg so my dealer oil changes are around 20k miles between, but I change it myself every 5-7.5k miles with Mobil-1.
Oh and my brakes are at 80% after 60K miles so I don't see me getting breaks before my 100k is up.

If the car runs great, then you should buy it back. Remember, there is always a chance you will get a "lemon" even if it is a new model.

The big differance between flipmde786 and myself is I have a 6MT and he has a Step. Also I drive 90% freeway at 75 Mph + with little traffic and he lives in Long Island and probibly does a lot more stop and go traffic or is just really hard on Breaks only he can answer that one.

Most of the problems with these car will manafest themselves before the 50k warranty is up. So at 45k you can make the dession to sell the car, get an extended warranty, or if you havent had any issues save the money on the warranty.

My E46 has 135K miles and has a total repair bill has been less than $1000 over 6 years and most of the repairs were past the 100k mark so an extended wouldnt have helped.

My sister inlaws 03 E46 325 has cost her a lot more in repairs ($3-4K) and is only at about 80K. I think she got a bad car and should have got rid of it before the warranty was up.

I am in the same boat as Richwm with mostly freeway at ave 65mph with a 6MT. At 45K miles, my front brakes still have 20K to go before replacement and my rear brakes still have 22K to go. Still thinking about buying the ext maintenance but looking back I never buy ext anything I own.

Well, each oil change is like $100. As for the brakes, I remember paying somewhere around $270-300 to do front and rear pads only on my old car (2002 Camry). So based on that, I'd say by 100k miles, the $985 for the extended maintenance will have paid for itself (and I'm pretty sure there will be some kind of rotor treatment by then too, which is also covered). Again, that's just my situation.

Side note: I believe the extended maintenance plan is something like $1595 or something now...I bought it before the price increase (thanks to a tip on this board)

EDIT: (forgot to answer the second question) They replace them everytime I go through them as per the service indicator.

Most of my miles are highway miles, but I can't say that all of those miles were at highway speeds hah...I also do a decent amount of stop and go in local driving. I'm not hard on the brakes on the average, although there have been times of "spirited driving." I actually didn't expect to go through the rears that quick, but I'll take the maintenance meter thing's word for it hah

Just curious...does me having Step make that much of a difference with braking? I'm assuming the difference is that with 6MT you can do more engine braking or using the clutch to go into neutral, etc
