High mileage stock turbos?
Wondering who has the highest mileage on stock turbos? By stock I mean the original ones that came with the car when originally bought. Mines have 88k miles, about 20k with JB4.
High mileage guys please chime in! |

108K miles, tons of track days, 10/06 build oem turbos, trans, and engine. Tuned since 32K miles, cobb stage 2+ aggressive/100 octane race maps since 75K miles. Everything's fine. It's called aggressive maintenance.

I had stock turbos until about 76,000 miles when I got new ones replaced under the turbo warranty due to waste gate rattle. It was tuned since about 8,000 miles and progressively more boost and mods like down pipes and intake and ran E85 mixes for the past 35,000 miles. The engine has always run strong, but have kept up with fresh oil, plugs, and intake valve cleaning. The new OEM turbos are good. They whistle a little more, but the waste gates are quiet. I still have all stock parts on from the warranty work and a smog check due next month. It's now at 78k miles and will have all my performance mods back on after the smog test.

I'm at 119,000 miles and on stock turbos, they are making noise now, too bad I didn't get new ones when they were within warranty mileage.. I drive around 100 miles a day highway miles. The car doesn't see WOT, and the only time I push it hard is when I need to pass.

007_e350, were there any symptoms to the oil leak? And how much oil were you losing over a period of time or miles? I am 50% sure I have the same problem. I am topping up almost half a qt of engine oil every 2 weeks.. it's pissing away engine oil every time I press the gas pedal. |

Not really, cuz solid data showed that it does not improve acceleration at all. I also am not having any issues pushing around 400whp, right now, so I don't need it. I'd rather do a level ten upgrade (Hardware) when I upgrade my turbos.

I'm going to try switching to 5w-40, but I assume the ideal solution is replacing the turbos? |

1- take it into stealership and fight tooth and nail to get it done under turbo extended warranty for WGs (its not a WG issue obviously.. but some ppl on here've got it done) 2- Get after market warranty and have it replaced (pricey option) 3- Order a turbo from ebay or something 4- Open the turbo yourself, get a rebuild kit ($140 / turbo) for TD04 Mitsubishi turbos (yeah these aren't BMW turbos) - you will have to send them in to get balanced (60 bucks per turbo), still comes out to be 400 for the 2 turbos but its a gamble coz I'm not experienced could screw something up .. |
