Carmax Bimmer NEVER again!!!

I purchased my 328i from CarMax in November 2012. 55k mikes, 2007 clean car, I was stoked. Three days later my car would crank slow, my breaks were grabbing, some trim pieces needed replacement, and my hood almost cut off my hands. I took it back to CarMax, and they told me that my brakes were glazed, I was responsible for the cost of repairs to the trim pieces, I needed a new battery, and new hood struts. I let them work on the car. The technician did not check the starter, still dragging. He didn't know how to register the battery, not registered. He replaced my brakes with CARQUEST stuff, and the rotors were warped. He didn't know how to reset the brake service minder. Did this myself. Car started to stall at intersections, while in drive. It needed new plugs, and trust me they don't last 100k like they claim. I've now invested into front passenger door handle, they refinished the old one with black silicone, windshield top molding, that they wouldn't touch. I have resealed my valve cover, replaced the molding, and replaced the rotors. Our Florida rains started not too long ago. Came into my car one morning and the front passenger foot well was a lake. Water tested, and found a bad sunroof seal. Replaced. Rains came again this week, and my rear driver's floorboard is the lake now. My rear passenger floorboard is damp. I took out the interior again, but it doesn't seem like it's coming from the sunroof. I blew out all drain on the previous repair. Help Please! I have lost trust in CarMax, and I'm losing my faith in BMW. Unless it means Best Machine Wash.

Been turning wrenches for 25 years. ASE Master Tech in automotive, and
medium/heavy trucks. GM and Toyota certified, but I'm a virgin when it comes to BMW.

Thanks for listening to my rant, and any help or advise that I receive.

Sounds like you didn't do any homework before purchasing the car

I purchased my car from Carmax. 75K later it still works great. I test drove the car before I bought it. Too bad they didn't work out for you.

I've had the leak also. The drain hoses had to be replaced.

I test drove mine too, but in Miami they only let you go around the block.
all of my problems came days and months later.
Did you get the work done at the dealer or did you do it yourself. would your headliner get wet? In my car only the floor is wet. Back seat out and every trim piece removed
Thanks!

I did it myself. I only noticed because I was doing the headliner. When you remove the front right pillar you can see the hose. It's only one screw. Mine was only the passengers carpet.

I pushed my car there last year. Had a few issues but they were fixed right away. I've never had any issue since. I replaced my plugs, coolant, oil, ect.. on my own. I would do this with any used car i purchased. Just because your bmw says you have 15k miles left on oil doesn't mean its true. You could get a car that someone reset the service on and end up getting screwed by trusting it.

Since you had issues within the first 5 days you could have returned the car, or purchased there extended warranty. I purchased it because i didnt want to worry about any issues that might pop up. You can cancel it at anytime so you could have purchased it, then canceled it 4-5 months later once you felt comfortable in the car.

I woudnt blame carmax, they price there cars accordingly and price them when there are issues and defects ect... sometimes you find a car there 1-6k cheaper than a dealer would sell, but thats because of issues such as scratches ect... They tried to make things right which is good. Its totally understandable that you have to pay for any psychical damage to the car since they already deducted that in the sale price. My car had a very small dent in the rear bumper of my car and ended up getting it for 2k below blue book because of it. Since then I've replaced that bumper and front bumper and origanlly planned to so it worked out better for me

It sucks that your having issues, if you havn't owned the car long why not go back and ask to add the warranty?

I'm in CA btw, i just noticed this post is in the florida section lol, i guess its my fault for looking at all new posts lol

When I went back for the sunroof leak, I already had the car for five months.
It doesn't down pour in the winter and spring months here. I was told by the manager to take it in for service. They would determine if it was warranty. CarMax extended does not cover body seals, so why spend my deductible. I'm a technician, I get parts at wholesale. My price comes under the deductible. It just sucks that I purchased a car 8 years younger than my Prelude SH that needs more work than my original vehicle.
As for mister, I should have done my homework. I bought the extended warranty for the water pump failure, and the crappy GM auto tranny in the 328i, if you can predict vehicle failures I'll bring you with me on my next car purchase.

Good luck with everything.

My dad bought an e90 from CarMax in 2011. Then when he went to go trade it in they told him that there was an accident on the CarFax that was never mentioned when he bought it. I know it's not mandatory for them to tell a customer unless they ask (he was foolish for not asking aswell) but I wouldn't be trusting in any dealer that doesn't tell you that voluntarily, specially one as big as CarMax.
Also, one of the window motors in the back gave out randomly one day too. Had to cover the window with plastic and tape until the next day.

The carmax is on there website... Your buying the car you have certain obligations when it comes to getting all your information. You have to do that with everything, phone, Internet, homes ect... Buying a car is no different. It's not the responsiblities of the workers to tell you everything wrong with the car it's yours to look at it, test drive it and fully inspect it. Carmax employees may not care as much when it comes to those things, why you ask? Well carmax is the only dealership I know of that doesn't pay there employees commission.

True. Like I said, he was foolish for not asking or doing the research.
Guess I still have that little bit of faith in people

And I was not aware that carmax didn't pay commission. That explains alot about the employees.

Safe to say it would be a million times better to buy CPO from BMW than from Carmax anyways.

I agree, but we all do have our blond moments and I dont blame the op for getting a little mad. Carmax ships cars all over and ships certain models to certain locations because they sell better. It's very possible the op got a car from a town that was really cold and caused the weather seals to break sooner. Its also possible that carmax didnt do the best inspection at that location.

Yeah, carmax doesn't pay commission, it sucks but it does benefit the consumer by being able to reduce costs. This is also why they don't hound you or try to convince you to buy the car instead they will answer any questions you have and any take you for a drive ect...

I agree about wanting to get it at a dealer but its not always the best choice. I wanted a 335i convertible and found the perfect one at a local dealer. It was on there website and when i got there the sales guy said, "Sorry, that car has been sold already." I said how is that you just posted it in your sale ad that came out today.. he replied that a sales man told someone that it was going on sale and they told there friend and it got sold to someone from Texas.

At that point i was like wtf... he then said, "well its not officially sold only a deposit was put down on it and the guy has 7 days to pay it" I was like ok, we'll ill pay you the sale's price (since it was the color and options i wanted) and he said sorry we cant do that but i have blah blah blah. I said no and then said I'll go somehwere else.

After that i got fed up with my local dealers (they own both in town) and searched online prices. Almost all the cars i wanted were 4-8k over KBB private party. Then i stopped into carmax and seen a semi basic 335i vert with most of the options for 29k. I was like wow, not to bad. It had 40k miles, and was for 29k. I ended up driving it home and got it for 2k bellow private party on KBB. It had a small dent in the rear which explains the low price, but even so it was way below retail like a bmw dealer would sell it for.

I was planning to change the bumper anyways so saving that money just went towards the paint. Worked out better for me.

Everyones situation is different, i know i got lucky and ended up with a good car for the price, but without carmax it would be even harder to get discounts on good cars like bmws since dealers are not everywhere like ford, toyota, honda ect...
