Plastidipping lugnut issue?

I want to plastidip my rims. I'm planning on taking the rims off to get a nice even coat.

However, what I see in every video is that people dip the rims (either on or off the car) and go right over the lug nuts. Would this not cause an issue by seizing the nut if the rim is on and coating the thread if they're off?

I dipped the rims on my Z4 2.5K miles ago, right over the lug holes. no problems here, torqued them to 90 ft*lbf and the lugs seated nicely on the plastidip.

how would that be a problem?

and how would you go over the nut if they're off?

I've found the lug holes to be annoying, but no more than that. First, no threads ever get involved. If the wheels are off the car, you've got holes. If they're on the car, you've got lug bolts.

Wheels off, I just dipped straight over the holes. I was careful to fully coat the wells so that no wheel paint would show through. Unfortunately, that meant there was a good thick sheet of rubber on the cone that the bolt seats in, and it twisted up when I torqued the bolt down taking the rest of the sheet with it.

In the end, I did a nice thick coat everywhere, then carefully used a razor to cut out the cones where the bolt seats.

It's not going to seize the nut, but I would recommend what alexwhittemore recommended. Take them off of the car, and remove the portion where the lug bolts go. That way you won't have them pulling the Plastidip off when you're torquing your lugs down.

Fast Way: Spray it as is.
Correct Way: Dismount Wheels, Clean, Plasti-Dip.
