11.8K on odo, service due in 1800 miles ;-)

Got in the car over the weekend and the yellow service light came on. I checked it and it says oil service due in 1800 miles. I have 11,800 miles on the car so shows you I really do "drive" my car

I can technically get the service done now since it says that its due but the oil was just changed at around 7-8k miles so ill let it run down a little more.

Yea you can get it done now - when you go to your dealer and they use the key reader it will come up as "recommended" - once your counter goes to zero
it will change to "due".

But you can do it now so go ahead and get it done!

When you start your car, in the Odometer it tells you at how many miles your car has to be taken for service right before it display your mileage.

Mine has 7850K miles already, and it used to say I have to take it by 8000. I called up to make an appointment, and few days later it changed to "7000".

even though they say every 15k, I think that's too much. I'd rather be safe and change it every 8-10K, Keeps your car running healthier. Besides, Oil changes are suppose to be free, change it as much as you like

Hmm, interesting, Thanks for the correction bro.

I was confused, of course, So that means I jumps in multiples of 1k. Because it went down from 9k, to 8k then to 7k.

Can the dealer reject my request to change the oil after I already made an appointment when they see there is still 7K miles left for the next scheduled service?

Calling my SA anyways.

Thanks

I have 7500miles and it says oil service @ 18000 miles. I called the dealer today and scheduled an oil change, I told them I want to see the oil to see how dirty it is.

My first service has moved down to 11,000mi. Maybe all the autocrossing?

Anywho, I'm at 8,800 and I've already changed the oil at 1300 and 7000. Good luck to all those who think that changing your oil every 10-15k is okay, don't believe it. 5k max on this twin-turbo beast (the turbos really cook the oil) - my buddy who is a BMW tech agrees. You should see and smell the oil that has come out already, nasty! I'm replacing the oil with the heavier Castrol TWS 10w60 they put in the M cars as well.

Cheerio!

Why do you want to put a thicker oil in a turbo charged engine?
Your turbos need thin oil! Thats why BMW recommends 5W-30 or 5W-40.
You're better of by getting the best oil for your turbos.
Red Line 5W-40!

Well if you like Red Line look at the description of their own 15w50: "Not recommended for street use in production engines that see sustained oil temperatures below 225°F (those engines should use Red Line 10W-30 or 10W-40)." http://www.redlineoil.com/products_m...1&categoryID=1

The 335's engine has a normal operating range of 230-250 as I'm sure you know. That said, I would still use a 5w30/5w40 in the winter, especially those of us in the northern half of the country. This summer I may try Red Lines 10w40 - the 335's engine is a scorcher.

15W-50 is unusable for 335i anyway, because its to thick. Why mention it.
People forget what the viscosity values mean. 5W is for winter and will flow easy by engine cold start AND engine cold start happens in the summer as well! At cold start is where the most wear happens. 30 or 40 is for summer. If you live in the death valley and race your car you want the 5W-40. Anywhere else the 5W-30 is good enough. Why you think BMW recommends 5W30 and 5W-40? For fun or maybe because they are one of the best engine manufacturers in the world.

I understand what you are saying and I agree. I said you should definitely use 5w30 in the winter. This is an interesting read, http://www.redlineoil.com/whitePaper/motoroils.pdf

5w40 is an interesting grade, it actually has a higher viscosity at both 40C and 100C than 10w30 and 10w40. see here: http://www.redlineoil.com/pdf/4.pdf

Also, just because BMW recommends it does not mean it is the best performing spec or even the most protective. They have to contend with other factors such as fuel economy, emissions, and most importantly, economics; what do they already have stocked at their dealer networks? The BMW spec 5w30 synthetic is used in several other BMW engines and is readily available. Lastly, if you remember back to when the E46 M3 was released, they initially spec'd a lighter weight oil. As soon as the engines began exploding they started to spec the heavier Castrol TWS 10w60. One of the best engine manufacturers in the world goofed. Was it because they were trying to get away with a cheaper alternative and it didn't work out? Who knows, but they got it wrong the first time.
The N54 operates at extremely high temperatures yet it is using the same weight oil as a E46 328. You are focusing on ambient temperatures which really aren't the issue. If the cooling system is doing its job the engine is going to run at 230-250 whether its 50 or 100 outside. The higher the operating temp the lower the viscosity, especially in high shear stress areas such as the bearings were the effective weight is reduced quite significantly. That said, the 5w30 *seems* to work just fine for daily, even then I have my doubts with the high temps, but I'm going to be using 5w40 this summer and race season for an extra margin of safety.

You're a Red Line Guy as well! Good choice!
For me I changed at 10000m to Red Line 5W-40 since I had no oil cooler.....
