Vanos solenoid questoin

Hey all,

Has anyone thrown a p2a87 or p2a82 code, cleaned and swapped the vanos solenoids and at some point later thrown the SAME code even after the swap (i.e. the error code did not follow the solenoid). And then actually replaced both solenoids and had the problem resolved?

This is happening to me. Threw a p2a87 a couple weeks ago. Cleaned and swapped right after I threw the code. And then last night threw a p2a87 again with a somewhat hard pull in 3rd. Though it was not full throttle and only about a 5 second pull.

I know if the code follow the swapped solenoid, that is pretty much a sure sign the solenoid is bad. But wondering if it is likely that it could still be bad solenoids even if the code doesn't follow.

Yes, me. Clean and swap did nothing, still had same 2A87. Replaced both and no vanos codes since (20k miles).

I threw a code once and not again for a couple of weeks. I cleaned and swapped the solenoids for piece of mind... then I would get the code just cruising. So I then replaced new and all is good now. My recommendation is to just replace.

That is exactly what I wanted to hear. Just ordered 2 solenoids. Here is to hoping it solves the problem.

I did and I know. But in all my reading, never saw a clear: "I swapped, threw the same code, changed and all was well".

Did see a lot of: "if the code doesn't follow then it is probably something else" and a saw a lot of ambiguous: "changing fixed it for me"

I am replacing. When you threw the code after the swap, was it the same code as before the swap?

Garage List
I replaced mine and over torqued the bold that holds it in place and broke it. Thankfully my best friend is a mechanic and got the bolt out the next day. Since then no more codes and much smoother idle and performance.

No. I did not swap it. It was worth it to me to just buy a new so that I don't run into the problem at the track again. Hate making the trip and having this issue or worrying if I need to keep swapping them.
