325i N52 engine, normal or high octane unleaded?
Is it worth using high octane? Any improvement on mpg? Worth the Pennies more per litre?

I use the shell v power diesel, wether it works or not I will never know! But for peace of mind I use it. I believe the v power/bp ultimate does make a difference, I watched a video on YouTube and It pretty much said enough to me.
http://m.youtube.com/#/watch?v=gQghB4asSnI That for me tells me all I need to know, but on a standard car might not be worth it. Personal preference I think is the key to your desicion. |

Just watched the youtube video, interesting results. I havent tried vpower in my e92 yet but in my previous car i used to get about 20 extra miles a tank. But i never really noticed a difference in power.
Think the fifth gear test should have also compared shell standard fuel to see if any difference between that and supermarket fuel. I actually used to get 15-20 extra miles per tank with asda petrol over shell standard, so about same mpg as vpower. |

I tried a couple of tanks of 98 in my car, and could tell no difference.
Did the same driving and managed the exact same miles to the tank. Didn't seem to pull any harder either. |

I used to use high octane fuel in my Z4 3.0 and it definitely made a difference over the standard stuff. I've tried the more expensive diesel in my 330d and it didn't make any difference

So seems like I need to trial this out.
probably won't start the trial for a few weeks, as have just got the car, so not really settled into a driving style, am definitely still in 'let's see what this baby can do' mode! |

When it comes to petrol I can only quote about my old E46, yet i would run that on no less that 97 and 99 if i happened to be passing somewhere that had it. The difference on that over 95 was it always seemed smoother and more important on a run it was fact I got better MPG as would drive one end of the country to the other a few times a year and did lots of tests of value V MPG and to me I avoid 95 octane unless i was desperate

It makes no difference to mpg in my N53 330i based on 10 tankfulls. I can't say it makes no difference to responsiveness but I can't say it does, either. The problem is that with no objective improvement, I want to believe in a subjective improvement or I am a mug for paying the extra.

If you are running a tune the higher the octane the better. I have never put anything but vpower in my car. Im now testing octane boosters to try and up the octane further. Maybe one day we will have the luxury of mixing some e85 in our tanks but until its readily available at a sensible price im having to play with vpower, octane boosters & meth to get more octane in my fuel. If however I was running bog standard I wouldn't bother with anything other than standard unleaded. I think as others have hinted towards saying its all down to personal preference. I would suggest that if you are not specifically tuned for higher octane fuels then you might notice little to no difference.

im an enthusiast, my car means more than just transport to me, so i would have to be pretty desperate to put 95 ron in my baby.
I don't see it as even a choice, its only a few pence more per litre, so even if you brim the tank from completely empty, its only going to cost you an extra 2 quid!. |

In spite of my previous comments about the lack of mpg improvement and uncertainty of other benefits, I do actually use VPower. This is mostly because my handbook implies that the engine won't develop full power on 95 RON.
