Make a dummy OBD look less dummy!

Anyone have any ideas of how to shove some pins/wires into a dummy obd port, so that it isn't so obviously dummy!?

get an actual ODB port with loom from another car? and just cut the loom off behind it (or better yet route the loom all over the car :P)

Rather than rummaging around a scrappies I wonder if I can deconstruct one of those extension cables, push the wiring into a genuine dummy

I always thought the dummy was pointless, it serves no purpose except confusing the hell out of a workshop.

Any thief would know it was a dummy in about 0.2 seconds when they plugged anything into it and they don't get a signal light on their equipment.

As long as you've moved or disabled the working OBD port that's the best you can do.

unless you wired in the 12v pins so that they got power on the device, but cant connect to anything?

again, more convincing if you have an actual OBD port rather than a dummy

Surely disabling the port means they wouldn't get a power signal?

So having a disabled port and then the belt and braces of moving the port is the best option?

My query really stems from trying to fool a thief that the dummy port is actually a disabled port.

Why try and fool them with a dummy port? That just means they'll spend more time in your car probably damaging more things. Just move it out of the way I'd say.

Interesting. The move out the way has already happened. I was actually of the opinion that not having a dummy would mean there was MORE chance of them rummaging around, I.e. looking for where it had been moved to.

Fair point. I actually thought that after I'd clicked 'submit'. I suppose it's hard to know what to do for the best, I've moved mine as well and intend on leaving it at that.

i think the dummy port is worth while. Its an extra deterrent to the thieves especially when its pitch black at night, most likely they will struggle to notice a proper ODB port to a dummy one.

You only need to disable the CAN BUS pair, not all the other stuff.

I would assume these disabled ports have just the CAN bus switched somewhere.

I thought a while back the best fix is to move the 2 CAN pins in your OBD socket to some spare positions, then buy an extension lead and move the CAN pins in that to the same positions at the car end of the extension, then you can only talk to your car with your own modified extension lead.

Why not just fit a switch on the can hi wire?

You could do this in around 10 minutes including running the switch to the boot.

Leave the port there, then when you go in for a service, open the boot and turn the port on again.

Just move it. The visual deterrant that they can't see the thing is superior to them breaking the glass or etc (assuming security update has been applied) to try and connect to a dummy port

You need to wire in a 240v supply from an inverter. Then maybe you will at te very least blow there machine to bits and or kill the tossers! Job sorted one less scum bag!

I never got around to connecting the screws to the live feed from the house fuse board

You can buy a OBD port blank socket from a dealer only a few quid. Metal pins can be bought as well that go into it if you wanted to wire them "live"

The best option is to move your real port, then fit a dummy that is powered.
So when they try to connect their kit the light comes on as it should but it won't work.
They are more likely to think their kit isn't working and clear off.
Remember they want to work fast to avoid being caught, so won't mess about for ages trying to make it work

Moving it is probably sufficient. When I took mine in for a remap, despite having as much time and space as could possibly be needed to look for it, I still got a phone call asking where the hell I'd moved it to
