Anyone ever think about unplugging from the internet and cable for a while?

So lately I have been thinking about unplugging from the internet, cable and cell phone for a while. Like maybe a couple months just to remember what life used to be like. I was thinking about keeping everything still hooked up, just trying really hard to not to use it.

Anybody ever quit cold turkey from this connected world we have created?

I am not really sure I can do it but I think I want to try.

It's really funny you bring this up. I've disconnected myself from smaller things in life, but if my work did not rely on internet and a cell phone, I would have no problem turning it off. I moved 700 miles away from everything I grew up around and even that has disconnected me from a lot of things of my past, and I feel like a better person, which is the best part yet.

I wish I could disconnect completely if it wouldn't impact the quality of my life. People get so strung up in the "now" and the world around them, rather than their own lives as an individual, and in turn forget what it even means to be your own person.

You can in fact do it, but the intensity of it all is dependent on how involved your life is with all of these factors. If your well being isn't determined by at least internet (for the sake of paying bills), I would say cut yourself off now and focus on YOU. A lot of people lose track of what the world has to offer, and you could benefit yourself more than you could imagine.

Just my two cents.

just take a week vacation in a spot with no cell service or internet. See how it goes and go from there.

Just got back from colorado and half the time we were out on the road we didn't have cell service and half the time we were at the hotel the internet didn't work. Towards the end of the week we were leaving our laptops closed and phones in the room.

... Thought about going full "Walden." Then realized I would probably die in a day or two. Can't live without internet or phone now but have gone without TV for a while.

I don't have cable, it's useless. The only thing I wish I had is motorcycle racing and Formula 1, that's about it.

Can't unplug from Internet or cell, as my work depends on it and I work from home.

But on vacation - agreed with above, that's the time to unplug from it all. Or else you may not feel like you had a vacation at all.

If I was to take a trip to somewhere, like a cabin with some friends, yea I would do that. But since my college class is online, I need my cell phone for work, internet for car parts and laid back time, and cable to watch new Pawn Stars....I don't see it happening right now

Used to not have cell/internet when I went to my cottage, thankfully that has all changed and I can spend much more time there now. With needing both cell and internet for my livelihood, not having either for an extended amount of time has become hard. If I go on vacation, that's a totally different story, but that's much more planned than something like a long weekend.

I'll probably be cutting cable TV out pretty soon, at least not until after the final season of Breaking Bad. Internet and phone however, are critical for everyday use.

If I had a better internet connection (live kind of out there with crappy DSL), I'd drop my satellite TV and just go with internet TV. But no, I wouldn't drop the internet. My work relies on it, even on weekends/holidays.

I was off the grid in Cancun as well, at least until it was time to confirm my flight back.

The best thing about the cabin is a land line that sometimes works, and about 10 TV channels. We're forced as a family to play board games, outside on the ATVs, or sledding in the winter. Work can't call since they don't have the number.

The only CRITICAL internet activity for me is driving directions. I have no idea how I managed in the past, and it drives me C R A Z Y when I can't find a place and have to go in circles. I'm willing to ask directions, but most people tell me to look it up on my phone now.

I find that the most peaceful time is when the power cuts unexpectedly. No electricity at all; no Internet, television, and cellphones sometimes do not work. After a few moments of panicking to find flashlights and candles, realization eventually hits you. It feels like the world is frozen standing still. Indeed very relaxing.

I remember when I went to Africa for a month, my sister literally seemed like she had withdrawal symptoms since Internet is basically non-existent. She was disconnected from Facebook, Instagram, twitter, etc..

Being on your phone using the Internet is so common today, that you could look socially awkward if you do not have face dug into your phone. One of my friends does not have a cellphone because he feels that they do not give you that emotional connection you get when talking in flesh. He is more of a face-to-face type of guy. I definitely see what he means with technology taking over how we are supposed to do things. But, I guess he is excluding a cellphone out of his life because he is a college student. That will suddenly all change when he gets a job. ;p

I thought about it. I think I could do without cable and internet for a while if I had things to do. For example, if I was travelling, working on a project (outside), etc. it would be easy. Otherwise, it'd be hard.

I went without internet/cable for a few days once. But no, I need internet. Also, now that I've gotten a M3 I lost all my friends so I need something to fill the void.
