Sushi and other options in NYC

Hey guys,

I'll be in NY next weekend and always love new suggestions of where to eat. Any good sushi recommendations? I'll also take Mexican, Thai, Ethiopian, or Greek suggestions. Anybody ever go to (I forget the name) but the Latin inspired sushi restaurant downtown?

Thanks...

Sushi-
1. Nobu (one downtown and one on 57th uptown)
2. Megu (downtown)
3. Buddha Bar (Meatpacking)
4. Tao (Midtown)
5. Buddakan (downtown)

These should be all you need

I work right next to Tao, it's pretty good I guess, if you want REAL Japanese food you should go to Saint Marks (2nd/3rd Ave and 8th Street) you will be happy there.

For sushi in NYC I also recommend Nobu, although it may be difficult to get last minute reservations. Nobu Next Door may be an alternative if you can't get into Nobu.
Sushi Samba is another good spot.
If you're into soba noodles then you have to try Sobaya in the East Village.

Thanks for the help guys. I was just looking at Sushi Samba. I found a sushi NY website (http://www.sushinyc.com/main.asp) that had bad reviews but they were old. We also thought about Nobu (we don't visit Vegas without eating there) and next door and even the one uptown for lunch.

Keep the advice coming. It's truly appreciated...

Sushi Options

I'd avoid Tao. Nobu is great of course, but if you want great sushi on the relative cheap my vote is for for Yama. There is one near Union Square and also one midtown east. Sushi is delicious, but the decor in the one near union square is cookie cutter local sushi joint - decor in midtown location much better. Not sure either take reservations. Sushi of Gari on the UES is also v good.

Sushi of Gari is highly recommended! Also, for Yama, there's one on Carmine's St. that takes reservations. There are 3 total in the city. I would only recommend the one on Carmine and the one by Union Square. Nobu 57 is great, and it should be easier to get reservations there. Sushi Yasuda in midtown is really good too. They have more traditional sushi that's conservatively creative. If you want to go super expensive, there's Masa by Columbus Circle. I believe their omakase starts at $400 - I haven't been here, so I can't speak to how good it is, but I've heard good things about it. You can't go wrong with any of these restaurants

Japonica- 12th st. and University Place- near NYU.
ONe of my favorite - reasonable price, fresh and big portion. Way cheaper than Nobu, but better than your corner sushi restaurant. The Dragon Roll is xcellent.

I have been to that building. Very spacious lobby. Are you in publishing?

Sounds very cool.

The long anticipated BofA building is supposed to be state of the art.

I second that. Just be prepared to break the bank compared to other places ($100-150 per person for chef's tasting).

Also, I know a lot of hardcore sushi people don't care for Nobu or Tao. Both are more for the name and exquisite entrees (and Tao is even more for their decoration and the fact that it's a place to be seen at). Actually, most people think the sushi at Nobu is very mediocre.

And please don't take this the wrong way, but I highly recommend you to avoid Sushi Samba or Minado. I'm sure my taste in other cuisines isn't as sharp as the other posters, but sushi is one thing I know quite well in the city.

If you want good sushi and don't care about the other stuff, I'd also recommend Tomoe located at Houston/Thompson.

2 hour wait lines speak for themselves (and the people who eat there actually order SUSHI)
