I used my Meguiars DA Microfiber system for the first time a couple weeks ago. I was happy with the results. The light swirl marks are now gone. But over the past few days I have started to notice the light scratches the system did not take out.

Can the DA microfiber system be used with more aggressive compound while using the same cutting pad? Any compound recommended? Do I need to get different pads?


Also, is there something better than Back to Black to refurbish sun exposed black plastic. The plastic on my Honda is pretty bad and Back to Black isn't doing a darn thing to make it look better.

what compound/swirl remover did you use the first time?

yes the mf pads can used for cutting/polishing with different compounds... what machine are u using?

did you finish up the swirl remover with a finishing polish like m4500 or wg fg?

I don't use b to b anymore for that reason.... once the plastic gets cloudy and faded, back to black doesn't seem to do much

Post up pictures. They could be RIDS which aren't going to be able to be removed, or micro-marring from the compounding stage which could be remedied by a fine finishing polish like Menzerna SF4500. You aren't going to want to compound your car again for a while because you are just going to run out of clear coat faster than you think. For sun exposed plastic, Ultima Tire and Trim Guard is the BOMB. Don't let the price scare you away. This stuff will last you a very long time if you are using it for trim. It keeps the plastic black for well over 2 months. I applied it to the plastic on my jet ski used in saltwater every weekend almost 2 months ago and there has been no fading in the from the first application yet. It's still beading very nicely as well.

I think they are RIDS. Definitely not marring. I have tried to take a few pics with my phone camera and them don't show up. They feel shallow. I can't catch a nail on the paint.

I used the compound and finishing wax that came with the Meguiar's kit. Nothing else.

I will have to give that Ultima trim guard a shot. Back to Black really isn't working on severely faded plastic.

Just leave them alone. You are going to do more damage trying to fix them.

If they are RIDS.... one of the reason you are seeing them now versus before is that the swirls were covering them. Once the shallow swirls are gone, only the deeper defects remains. This is quite common generally in vehicles that are swirled-up badly.

I don't recommend chasing RIDS on a DD unless you know how much paint you are working with. If you must then get your paint measure prior to starting any aggressive process. 5 - 6 mils or 120 - 150 microns is healthy. Anything under 4 mils or 100 microns is iffy. To treat RIDS, you need to be strategic and surgical. The broad stroke approach generally removes way too much clear.

Ultima makes a nice product and if it still wouldn't work then you might want to consider a dye (Tuf Shine Black Restore Kit or Showroom New).
