New turbos.... new type of rattle!!!
So.... had horrible wastegate rattle and got new twins under extended warranty about 1K miles ago. Now I'm experiencing a louder, different type of rattle. Here's the skinny:
- Definitely coming from either front or middle of the car (not the rear) - Noise coming from the passenger side - Rattle only heard on acceleration, not when decelerating - Can be heard in 1,2, & 3rd gear mainly in between 1.5k to 3k rpms - disconnected the two vacuum lines and drove the block, rattle significantly reduced - sounds like metal clanking around - The sound cannot be heard while in neutral and revving the engine, like the infamous wastegate issue Can't imagine it being the wastegates being that they were just replaced, I was very familiar with that sound. Any ideas, has anyone experienced this type of rattle? In case it helps... the only mod I have on my '07 335i is the golf tee mod (for now!) |

Here's a quick clip of the noise. You'll notice the clanking noise as soon as I start taking off.
Passenger that took the clip mentioned he was hearing it from the middle of the car. 09BMW: problem is only my turbos/wastegates have warranty and I'm not so sure this is related. Thoughts? |

Might be your catalitic converters that are shot, I read that failing turbos or injectors actually do a lot of damage to the cats or they get flooded white smoke, and that can cause a very similar rattling to the one of the wastegate.. OP did you ever find out what was the problem?

Dealership techs a notorious for leaving parts off your car including hanger bolts. Take it back to the dealership and have them fix it. I had to take mine back 3x to have them replace missing screws, nuts, washers, bolts. The list goes on. I'm surprised they got both turbos installed.

David was right. It was the bracket that holds both pipes in the middle of the car. Don't recall what it's named. Replaced it and noise gone. Thank goodness it wasn't the cat.

I have been getting a rattle on acceleration as well and the dealership left this bracket off my car. I never thought that would be the cause of the rattle though. Do you have a part number and cost by any chance?
