86k, original turbos/wastegates. Been tuned since 30k miles. i get some occasional wastegate rattle, but other than that, they seem to still boost ok and do not smoke. dont burn any oil either. daily the car on about 18 psi.

83k miles on original turbos. No wastegate rattle or siren, and I push the car almost all the time. These things were made to be driven! No tunes so far.

49xxx original turbos. Boost perfectly, no rattle, no excessive whine...smokes for days and modest oil consumption (1qt every 1K or so, probably a little less).

Yeah if you have your car serviced at the dealer have them document a rattle a couple times before you actually have them replaced so it goes through with no problem

96k original turbos afaik, purchased car at 38k. Wastegates replaced twice - first time at 45k, rattle came back with a vengance, replaced again at 78k, no problems since, knock on wood. Tuned since 50k
Was told by BMW tech friend to help prevent turbo failure, change oil every 5-6k, and ensure it's always topped off, never let it even dip low. I also make sure to wait until engine temp hits at least 170 before dipping into boost and shifting higher than 3k. Also, let engine run a bit after romping on it to cool the turbos off, prior to shutting off the car. Not sure if all this matters, but it helps me sleep better at night. |

147k original hard working turbos (cobb tuned since 63k). Treat them with respect and they will perform for you (4-5k OCI, warm up and cool down steps, etc.)

Btw I change oil every 5-6k mobil 1 euro 0-40 always wait for proper warmup and cool down period after hard driving. I'm looking at rb's down the road, but wouldn't mind a new set of stockers before the 82k warranty runs out. R

In any event, turbo replacement costs have come way way down since the first failures were recorded. So it's pretty much like any other part replacement(i think about $600) and needs about 10 hrs labor. Any indy shop, even cheaper. So don't fret guys, it's not as scary as once was.

I wouldn't do that if I were you. Fresh oil has ALOT of detergents in it, which break down over time. Therefore running your engine pretty much always with 'fresh' oil is not good for it either. I change mine every 10K and I'm sure to use a full synthetic (which BMW dealer oil is NOT)
