Car in shop for 2 months- hope no one needs an oil pan
All,
Just a heads up. My D has been in the shop for over two months because the oil pan is back ordered. The dealer stripped the pan and they ordered a new one. We found out BMW is back ordered and they wont' start shipping until November. I have a loaner. Just a heads up- hope no one else needs an oil pan because you're screwed if you do. |

So judging from your sig, your loaner is a Pinto? Gonna be a rough October for you my friend.

they stripped it doing an oil change I assume?
I never understood how people who probably do 50 oil changes a week end up making mistakes like this. Price for an oil pan is listed over $400 ![]() |

what do you mean by stripped? If the drain plug threads are stripped they can repair it with a threaded steel insert, it will be better than new.
http://www.timesert.com/html/drainplug.html http://www.cgenterprises.com/bmw_2009_2010.htm Looks like you need a 12mm x 1.50 threaded insert; that is a common drain plug size. i'm surprised that the dealership didn't suggest this in the first place. |

Case in point, on my previous 528i E39, it's common for the power steering hose to leak at the clamp. The dealer suggested that I spent over $500 (parts and labor) on replacing the 2 hoses. I declined and went to Home Depot, bought 2 screw type stainless steel hose clamps for less than $1 each. After that, I drove the car for over 70K miles after that without any leak. |

For the clamp - I'm assuming that this must have been a return hose with a spring type clamp? If a high pressure hose with a crimped ferrule, there really aren't good clamp options. I personally would have used a high-pressure "fuel injection" type clamp rather than a worm clamp; I prefer them for everything, they don't damage the hoses nearly as much when tightened. but you can't argue with working for 70K miles ![]() yes, I have owned a lot of vehicles that weren't worth paying a mechanic to repair... |
