Fried DME :(
Recently, I got water in the ECU from washing the car without the rain diverter on. I was able to clean it up and get the car running, but everytime I start the car I get 2CFB and 2D09 codes. When I reset the throttle adaption, the car will run perfectly. The car also randomly now thinks the back left door is open for a split second.
My question is, I am looking for a used DME and don't know how compatable they are. I have an MSD80. I see some others for sale online, but looking at the picture of the labels; they have different part numbers. Does this mean it's not compatable? Or does it just mean that it will need to be recoded? The picture is of my DME. ![]() The link is an example of an MSD80, but with a different part number. http://www.ebay.com/itm/BMW-2007-335...-/270887657149

My DME ended up fryin about a year and a half ago and I had to get the vehicle sent to a dealer since it has to be VIN specific and then recoded to work for your specific car. I'm not 100% sure on this but the indy shop that I use told me that there is a warranty on the DME's but I dont know how many miles. You could say that the rain cover was on and that the DME is now acting crazy and see if it might be covered. Hope this helps OP

I'll look into that, but I think it will be pretty obvious that I have modded the car. If I were to buy that DME off ebay, would I be able to just throw it in the car and get it recoded?

Unless ebay sells VIN-coded DME's then I am very doubtful. Mine was shipped from BMW NA in NJ specifically for my car is not just plug and play and re-code.

I just looked up the warranty for the car, it does show the DME being warrantied up to 8 year/80k miles under the Federal Emissions Warranty...I don't know if they will accept that warranty for my problem. I'll call tomorrow to make an appointment though.

I was FBO Cobb when my DME fried the dealership wouldn't warranty it. Had my Indy do it. They can't be recoded so you'll have to get a new one. I went from an msd80 to msd81 if I remember correctly the new one was also made by Siemens.

I would remove all your mods if possible and put EVERYTHING back to stock and play dumb. These DME are expensive and cost money, its better to pay for removal/reinstall of mods IMO and get that replaced under warranty.

Make sure you put the cowl back on. There are so many people advocating it causes no harm when you remove the cowl. This thread is a good example why you should leave it on.

So buying a used one and having it coded for my car is not an option? :/

question
So what are the symptoms of a DME going bad and what is the DME control sorry kind of a NUBIE
I ask because while re-setting a exhaust code ( I had switched tunes back to stock and got a code for basicly not having CATS on my car ) So while scanning and re-setting this code I seen ECU ( no description available ) Then P2A17 and P3OFF The ECU unknown code is what I didn't like. car runs fine I also seen on a online auction site people say they can repair DMEs ... anyone try this ( if mine goes out just want to know the options ) Last edited by chadjones99; 08-18-2019 at 01:41 PM.. I shouldn't have needed a DME clone but personally I think I got screwed over. The guy who did the work was unresponsive as hell, I had asked him if he could just do a diagnostic as there were numerous placed who could do a diagnostic for ~$100 but I guess he just wanted to make money and sent me back a cloned DME. I would have been sort of okay with that but the price was nearly $500 and the prices I had messaged him about and tried to confirm was only $378. Thanks for nothing Kassel Performance, I only went with him because he was local and I wanted to support them. I truly do feel ripped off after that experience. If he at least replied to one of my questions I would accept that I'm an idiot, but he just ran up a bill when it was unnecessary. He did say the original DME was fine too, but ya know. $100 vs $500. |

Talk to Guy from N54 boards, he re-coded my DME for 250. He can also sell you a good, tested working MSD81 for cheap. You just need to send him one key and your CAS (CAS has to be synchronized to DME for the car to start).
