You'll find that most agree that the BMW PE is great sounding exhaust. A little pricey though, even used they go for $900-$1k.
On a budget, I've heard there are some magnaflow options that are decent.

PE is too pricey.

Me too, shop labor $150 (remove resonator, cut/welding), maganflow muffler $100, $50 tips, $25 magnaflow y-pipe.

Add more volume by installing a cone intake or use your stock airbox and remove the charcoal filter.

I'm in the similar situation but for a 09 E90 328i. Been trying to looking up the PE for the N52 but can't seem to find any pictures. Does the PE come with the resonator?

A local shop quote me a cat back stainless with Magnaflow muffler for roughly $450 is that good deal? Not sure if I need a resonator or not. They also recommended muffler delete for cheaper but I don't want it loud.

You have a chance of droning with no muffler. If it's not loud enough cut out the resonator.

Active Autowerke Exhaust sounds and looks great on my car. The BMW PE is good but is more expensive.
