I have a question...on the stock front bumper, from where does the oil cooler get its air?

By the passenger side foglight there is a path that leads to the oil cooler. I haven't tried it yet but I would probably remove the foglights to get some more air through there. Don't need them anyway as the HIDs are plenty bright enough and there's no real fog here.

Is that path the same on the coupe?
I know there is a duct for the brakes...does that same duct also feed the oil cooler?

It's a different duct than the ones for the brakes. If you compare the lower grilles, the passenger side one should be more "open" than the driver's side one. At least mine is... That area leads to the oil cooler.

I just looked there for the first time...kinda scary that I never looked there before.
So I suspect we could get a lot more air to the oil cooler just by taking out the fog light. What do you think?

I would think so, but I haven't actually taken the under belly pan off before... I think I'll take it off and have a look tomorrow when I change the oil.

Update... I'm out of town and never got to change the oil so I didn't pull the foglights. When I do, I'll post results although I wouldn't have high hopes for big temp drops, maybe a little though.

The passenger side lower bumper cover has a seperate opening for a seperate duct for the oil cooler. It looks like it directs the air sufficiently. If you took the fog light out, you would have to make a custom duct or use flex hose to route the air back up to the oil cooler area. I think just a larger oil cooler that is more efficient would lower temps while still using the same stock oil cooler duct pathway. The drivers side has the mesh grill "covered" from the right of the brake duct to the fog light.

I spent some time looking in there with a flashlight and agree...taking the fog light out might get a bit more air but probably not much.
I guess we should just play with different oil weights until somebody makes a replacement.

Does someone want to take off their front bumper cover and post some pics of the space available either to upgrade the existing oil cooler on the passenger side or to explore the space on the driver's side to see if it will accomodate another stock oil cooler in the same area (mirror image) as the passenger side in the wheel well. It would be easy to provide the same duct or custom fab one to this area as well as cutting out an exit pathway vent into the wheel well. I just don't know if you would need a larger oil cooler pump to accomodate the extra oil and increased distance of circulation.

I have started to ponder adding a water spray to the oil cooler.
I think before I spend too much time worrying about mechanically reducing the oil temperatures I am going to experiment with different oil weights. My next oil step will be to Redline 10W-40. If that does not fix it, I will try the BMW Motorsport 0W-60. Because I live in So Cal I can afford not to worry about the oil's viscosity at low temperatures.

I will be trying RedLine 5w30. You try the 10W40 and we will compare. BTW, the 10w40 should run hotter than a lower viscosity since it is thicker and takes more energy to push it through the system.

If you're going to try Redline I can't help but ask why you guys aren't going with the 5w-40? It has the same pour point as the 5w-30 and slightly higher viscosity at both 40 degrees C AND 100 degrees C when compared to the 10w-40.

I have the cold weather package and I'm in Norcal, so I actually have absolutely no use for the headlamp washers. It would be a pretty good retrofit, if I could activate them using a separate switch or something. Actually I don't even know how to activate them now... I figure headlights on and hit the windshield washer?

I think one theory I have read dealing with thicker oil is that it does a better job of dissipating heat. But that is just a theory.
I like the idea of taking the water spray mechanism from the headlight washers and attaching a nozzle to the oil cooler. The only problem (I think ) is that you need to clean the windshield to also clean the headlights. I need to RTFM one of these days... ![]()
