Set the wheels straight ahead, disconnect battery, remove steering wheel, re-fit steering wheel straight, reconnect battery. End.

Garage List
Get it on a Hunter wheel alignment machine. I'm not sure 'thats how they are'. You could be referring to 'Ackerman steering' but I don't think that really applies nowadays and it would be to the right in the UK anyway.

The tyres and tracking might be straight but only when the wheel is to the left. If they set the trackign again with the wheel dead centre it would probably sort it out. As long as it is not massively out of course.

I thought it had a self adjustment that didn't need you to take it off and refit it dead straight?!

you cant do that as the spline has a small groove so the wheel will only fit in one position, ive tried.

Yep, there is a wide spline at the top or bottom (can't remember exactly) and this dictates how it will fit. It will only go in one way.

if the car is driving straight the tracking is correct it will be the steering angle off. To correct this find a decent garage who actually knows how to track a car. steering wheel is centred first and clamped in position then adjust the tracking.

what would be the cost for a 4 wheel laser alignment in a hunter machine? do you recommend someone in n. london?
also, recently a friend with a 1er asked me if it would be ok for his car to perform a 4 wheel alignment in a garage that has the proper machine for the audis quatro, vws r32 r36 etc (he said he has the one that VW recommends for their 4x4 cars). do you think that the result would be equal with a hunter?
thanks

If you can get to near Wembley mate I can recommend a good place. Expect to pay between £80-£120 for a proper job.

Had this problem with mine but it was down to the right. BMW did the tracking and I got it back with the wheel then down on the left!!!

Back it went again and it's much much better now... perhaps it's still slightly down to the left but only by a gnats pube and I really can't be bothered to go through the pain of getting them to look at it again!

Good luck, it can be sorted but you'll find probably your self hyper critical of the 'exact' right position and many road surfaces/camber can be misleading making you think it's still slightly out. Also double checking your tyre pressures as differences can also lead to the wheel being slightly out...

You align the wheels to the steering wheel

Very straight forward any tyre place worth their salt can do it with laser alignment
