DEFIV Fabrication Direct Port Methanol Setup - Tuning Begins

After the direct port methanol setup was completed, strapped on and shaken down we sourced a BT Cable from LostMarine so that Rick of DEFIV Fabrications could begin tuning in earnest.

The last log from that day is here: http://datazap.me/u/uniter/defiv-fab...ce-added?1-5-6 Rick was able to add in additional timing as well as pull out timing advance / IAT compensation values (DEFIV is experimenting with their own IAT sensor but softening the compensations tables does the same ATM.)

The DEFIV Plate can accommodate a fuel rail, methanol and nitrous nozzles all at the same time.

Here's a shot of the nozzles spraying in a test run:

The Procede is doing a good job of managing the PWM Meth injection system and introducing more timing advance on top of the flashed values. I'm sure that any HFS-4 system could do the same.

All in all I'm enjoying the new-found power, I'm confident that I'm getting well metered equivalent flow into each cylinder.

As a final note the support I received from the Procede team and Robert was top-notch. These guys know, love and support their product. Thanks!

Whoa Rick is tuning your car? That’s awesome, and I had no idea he was cooking this up for the N54. Is it a one-off?

Also to be clear- you are still using the PROcede to control meth via PWM/Injector DC, but the actual spraying is done via port injection through the manifold. So the only “difference” is physical location/amount of spray, correct?

I've always been very worried about direct port meth injection. If one Nozzle(s) clogs that Cyl in Toast! :-/
But working perfectly im sure you'd get sick gains!
I would try and PLENUM Injection style and see how that compares.
I would also add 1 small meth nozzel before the IAT sensor so that it sees the drop in Temps and allows the DME/Procede to Adjust timing accordingly...
Keep us posted man!
Great Job!

135Pats: He does have it in solidworks so.... probably not a one-off Have I seen you at the shop or do you have a different car there? Right so the procede handles all the injection and tuning. One should be able to keep everything, pump, FAV and flow sensor and just attach the DEFIV bits.
JMARS: We've have that idea + we have an IAT sensor in port + biasing the IAT signal during WOT and METH conditions. So we'll figure out what works best.
There's lots of filtration in this setup; the procede is fast to respond to changes in flow, quality meth is being used. The likely-hood of a nozzle clog related engine explosion is low.

The reason I leaned towards plate as opposed to plenum injection is because in it's final incarnation it will be capable of supporting 6 additional fuel injectors, water/meth nozzles or direct port nitrous oxide. It could use any pairing of the aforementioned options, it was designed with all of that in mind...this is just a prototype atm...there will be plenty more holes available in the final version

Nah I don’t know Rick personally, just know the quality of the work he fabs up. This is a very cool setup, seems well thought out. IF you can control it safely and reliably, that will obviously provide far better cooling properties in each cylinder. Do you have any sense of how well it’s atomizing spray when injecting that close to the combustion chamber? This type of setup is pretty rare on N54s, 99% of the meth systems we run are pre TB spray. Maybe some custom intercooler spray setups out there as well.

Atomization is good. Good mix will happen in cyl as well, the major 'good atomization' ruckus is for pre-TB setups because cyls 1-6 will receive slightly less methanol and if air / meth / water mix isn't just so it's a fail party.

The fact that the procede can drive the meth fast action valve directly and control ignition advance accordingly is really amazing. Everything wired right up and worked.

Your power steering reservoir looks different than mine...Is that original?

I think? It’s from an F10 5 series. Or maybe that was an F10 coolant expansion tank I saw swapped into an N54 on another thread. Def not a stock N54 PS tank.

Maybe that one won't leak? Haha

It's the tank for the 'adaptive steering' systems.

If this is designed to run injectors as well, why even mess with the meth side of it? Why not just add more fuel(corn or dinosaur farts) and call it a day? With a direct port meth system, are you even getting any of the cooling benefits, or are you just getting the added octane boost? If only octane, the meth side of this seems even more of a waste...and a potentially dangerous one at that.

Overall, nice to see a potential source of extra injectors finally coming around and excited to see where those get us. The meth portion though....ehhhh...

Unless you have enough octane and in-cylinder cooling to keep things happy without it, sudden loss of methanol spray to an individual cylinder would rapidly cause expensive metal parts to melt. Not good.

Very interesting setup but I have to agree with pwr hungry. Why not just spray more fuel? Ask Turb0Mike about how he feels about meth...

I think this is one of the reasons why my motor blew but have yet to take apart the motor (might just swap and not even care). I will still have meth plugged in but I will be using a light spray with the smallest nozzles and will not be tuning for its timing advancement. I will just have a e85 and C16 map.
