Active steering

Has anyone with active steering taken their car for an alignment to a shop other than the dealer.? And had success.

Yes it is different! The shop you take it to has to have the BMW computer to hook it up to (GT1). Active steering has steering angle calibration that needs to be zero-ed with the GT1 computer before and alignment can be done. Most tire/alignment shops will NOT have the GT1 to do so. Dealer charges twice the price (almost) to get it done.

Regular shop did mine (active steering) and ROYALLY fucked it up, took it to the dealer and they fixed it!

Would recommend the dealer based on my experience.

The issue of throwing off the steering angle sensor can happen on any car. It is not specific to cars with Active Steering. Some people run into this issue and need to have the steering angle sensor reset to turn off the lights/codes (more likely after significant lowering). This can be done with INPA, BT Tool etc. or even simply turning the steering wheel lock to lock several times. So going to the dealer is not necessary. In my case, I had coilovers installed as well as m3 front control arms and never had an issue with alignment at an indy shop. No reset was needed.
