sometimes the cars computer gets screwed up and needs to be reset and the warning goes away. That has happened to me a couple times. But.. lol I did bring it in just to be safe and both times they said it was the computers fault.

This happened to me aswell 3 months/1500k miles after I bought mines. My SA said it was a routine check up. Took it in and didn't argue.

Condition-based service is certainly convenient for the service shops and BMWUSA, but not for us poor owners that now have to bring it in multiple times at random intervals to get done everything that was accomplished in one Inspection II in previous years. |

Many of us on here change our oil in between the freebies from the dealer. Every 12-15k miles is good for bmw bottom line, not for you car. |

I did have a change oil last 8k. Maybe my friend tech forgot to reset it. I was just wondering why too early because I thought that it will ask for it near the 15k mark.

A default 15,000 mile OCI is a misnomer. The system is called Condition-Based Service (CBS) so the need to change the oil is dependent upon many operation variables that determine the condition of the oil. So, there is no set mileage oil change interval; around 15,000 miles is generally a range of where most cars fall when the oil needs changing. My car with an N52 and the driving conditions I drive under consistently called for oil change that averages around 17,500 miles. Recommends changing the oil every 12 months regardless of mileage, which you can consider a default OCI.
If you had an oil change between resets of the CBS and the service indicator was not reset by the tech, the car will not know the difference and continue to calculate the interval based on the inputs to algorithm uses to determine the OCI. The CBS system always provides an estimated mileage left to the next required oil service, so you can always check if it was or was not reset after an oil change. |

I always like to joke with my friends that the car telling me when it needs service and for what is part of what makes it so German... and that it tells me it needs service in a stern German accent.
"Achtung! Take me to ein BMW service center, bitte. SCHNELL!" Whether or not a stern German would say please is up for debate, but I like to believe my car would.
