N54 Engine Rattle: HELP!

So, I've exercised the due diligence and searched for solutions, but my problem doesn't sound like a waste gate problem or drive shaft problems that I've read about and listened to that are detailed on this forum, youtube and google.

That said, here's the issue and I'm not exactly sure when it started. When running through the RPMs (both stationary like the video and moving) I get this knocking sound from under the plastic engine cover. I initially thought it was the radiator fan shroud banging on the radiator until I listened with the hood open.

I am getting an 2A87 error code and I will fix that this week. Hopefully that's might solve the problem.

Any constructive thoughts and suggestions are appreciated.

Here are the video links:

p.s. mods include Catless DPs, DCI, Helix FMIC and JB4. The problem exists both with AND without the tune running.

ALSO: if this is the wrong section of the forum, please let me know and I'll move.

It could be your solonoids failing they control the vanos and are placed in front of the engine towards the front.

I hate to say it but it sounds kinda similar to an issue I had back a few months... rod knock... which resulted in a new motor. I sincerely hope it's not that. Link to my vid

OK... the shop is booked for a couple more days. I did send the vids back to my service manager in the states and their mechanic said that while it could be a rod, since I threw the vans solenoid code that's the first part and that he's heard similar noises from alternators and water pumps. all hope is not lost just yet!

So, I cleaned and switched the solenoids. The knock more or less went away for a little bit but now it's back. I'll see if I throw the vans solenoid code for the intake side this time. In the mean time I'm going to order a replacement part since the clean and switch seemed to be the issue (for now).

First thing that came to mind was rod knock. I hope I'm wrong.

just for my own edification...

rod knock = new engine required

right?

would it be possible to just rebuild?

What kind of mods do you have and what kind of power were you making for this to occur?

I was running a JB4, Helix FMIC and CP-E catless DPs. The mods were on the car for just a few thousand miles when it started the rattle. At the beginning I didn't think much of it. I actually thought it was some heat shield rattling. In any case, the car was also still under CPO and maintenance program so everything had been taken care of on time. I can also say I was just commuting in the car and wasn't beating on it.

Did the rattle go away once the car was heated up?

Did BMW cover the costs? Are you getting a new engine now? Just curious

Did you change the oil more than the BMW recommended 15k or did you do it at their intervals?

I had a spun rod bearing too, not fun. Seems like at least 1 of these pops up every couple months now.

I was on the BMW schedule as it was a CPO with maintenance plan. I only made it through one oil change though before I started noting what I now recognize as symptoms.
