Help with Mr.5 Intake on e92 335i
Hi Guys -
I am having difficulty figuring out how to install the Mr.5 intake. I got the piping, filter etc, however, space looks REALLY tight in the engine bay. Few things I've noticed: a) There is a metal brace/bar blocking the gap to feed the 3" piping (Labelled as A in the pic in red) b) The plastic hose prevents me from installing the 3" flex pipe to the intake as it is too high (Labelled as B in the pic in red) c) The gap between the wheel arch plastic and the rear of the head light has no where near 3" room to fit the piping. How did you guys install it? Any help would be greatly appreciated! |

If I'm not mistaken this intake is similar to the dinan one correct? You have to relocate the power steering reservoir to install the dinan snorkel.
I would find the dinan instructions online and use that as a guideline

The brace needs to be removed. There is room but it is a very tight fight. It will deform the fender liner to some degree when the hose it in place. You're also going to need to remove the power steering pump and bracket and cut out the brace on the under side of the bracket. I used a dremel and the steel is pretty hard - it'll take a while. You then reinstall the bracket and put the reservoir on the inner most stud only, essentially moving it toward the engine. Route the hose over the DVs and on the outside of the PS reservoir and under the PS bracket. The last thing is the brake booster vacuum line nipple. The nipple points down and needs to be rotated toward the air box so the hose doesn't hit it. It's hard plastic and can break. Be careful when rotating it. You may use a hairdryer to soften the hard plastic lines. I never did but I've heard of people doing that. I just slowly worked it trying to avoid pushing on the nipple part. Lol. Just read that last sentence aloud..

wow that set up looks nice Nhe261. Did you have to remove the structural bar?
I am curious. - if the structural bar is remove to accommodate the piping, what consequences will this have? |

Which structural bar? I don't think I did. The only thing I removed is the bracket of the steer wheel liquid tank to make the room for the filter.

Only the coupes have this structural bar (A); I didn't want to take mine out so I'm going with a 2.5" tube rather than a 3" and just squeeze it in there. I haven't installed my set up yet though......

If You do my design not put the filter in bumper It should be fine as the bar is pretty Low And I Think it is not necessary to put the filter in the bumper ) I added a Wall to block the heat from the engine it works very Well. After a long City drive the filter is still Very Cool as the Stock airbox filter is hot Like the Cooking pan, I opened the Cover under the fender to Let the Cold air in and the opening is big enough IMO See the picture of my first revision of the heat block box design, It has been approved Works So I will make it a Carbon fiber box Later Last edited by Nhe261; 11-11-2013 at 11:28 PM.. |

I was able to route the pipe behind the PS reservoir once I moved it over. I used the super abrasive resistant pipe and does not give at all. It forced the inner fender cover to flex out a little bit. I definitely didn't want to cut the support beam and compromise the rigidity of the front end for the sake of an intake. It was a tighter fit than anyone on here that has done this let on.
