Best air filters for extreme hot weathers(Saudi Arabia)

Hey all,

Well I have read many threads and posts from all types of people in regards to this topic, but it didn't get one sold answer to what to choose for my car...I own a 335i 2007 coupe model with some tunes: ER intercooler, AR downpipes, active autowerkes bov, bms oil catch can, cobb v3 and still missing the air filter.

I live in Saudi Arabia where the temperature reaches 60 degrees Celsius[/B] during the day, which is obviously not good for the turbos...so while reading all threads some recommend DCI's ( i.e. Injen, afe, etc..) while others drop in filter with air scoops, some said the afe elite stage II is the best, while others recommended the ultimate racing air intake ...but every post ended up with an opposite answer and that it is not the best solution because (I) DCI's will suck in heat from the engine temp and the hot weather leaving the engine with super hot air flow, (II) drop in air filter is just throwing money for nothing as results are the same compared to stock air filter, leaving the stock air filter being more reliable due to it being a high genuine air filter, (III) afe elite stage 2 air box filter seem to narrow the air flow coming from outside toward the engine by as they are designed in a way where the air will flow through tight opening which will result in a low air flow to the engine and will produce less performance than that of the stock and (IV) ultimate racing air intake does not properly work due to the fact that air that come through the narrow opening near the fog light is minimal resulting in lower air flow.

To end this I'm looking for posts that would finalize this huge debate all people are having (at least my self). Looking forward to read posts from all people especially those who live in hot weather cities such as Saudi Arabia.

Cheers

Mr. 5 custom intake would be your best bet.

I think the AFE closed box (http://www.x-ph.com/magnum-force-sta...ke-system-n54/) is a good choice for you.

IF you really want to push the limits, Water/methanol injection will help tremendously where you are. I know the guys we dealt with in Lebanon are all running to not only compensate for heat but also average fuel quality.

Custom Mr 5 or stock. You need the best filtration you can get there.

No intake will help you with those ambient temps. You need meth and/or E85 to keep things cool.

+1. And, if you don't already have it, a good intercooler.

السلام عليكم

The aFe Stage 2 Elite SI would be the best solution for your situation. I would only suggest sealing the filter outlet on the side of the intake box like I did here http://www.e90post.com/forums/showpo...&postcount=118

Don't seal the cover, make a gasket so it can easily be removed when you want to change filters. When I sealed my cover I had to break it off later to change the filter but at the same time I "fluked" making a premature gasket...lol

Here is the dyno of the before and after results, the stock intake vs the aFe stage 2 Elite SI - which was done in higher temps and still out performed the stock intake with a K&N drop in filter

I would also suggest that you invest into a BMW PPK kit, and a oil cooler upgrade, it will be worth the investment for those conditions you are in and keep the car running cooler.

I agree on the AFE Stage 2 SI. It's one of our most popular sellers.

Since it's a closed box style it offers the benefits of a cold air system and the airflow typically found in traditional DCI.

However, if you just want a filter, AFE offers panel filters specifically for different conditions.

The intake will only do so much though. You really need a good intercooler to keep those temperatures in check. The intercooler is arguably more important then the intake.

You need an intercooler first, second another oil cooler, third if you have the funds an intake, afe stage two for you.

I'm surprised with the heat you have there, intercooler would have been my first choice.
Then oil, air, DP, tune, etc.

And tell me it's not a black car lol.....

Yeah guys these are my tunes: ER intercooler, AR downpipes, active autowerkes bov, bms oil catch can, cobb v3. So I'm almost FBO...my tunes are top quality tunes and they cost me hell of money...I guess I'm gonna get a good drop in filter with air scoops...due to the shortage of money... What do u guys recommend for a good quality drop in filter and air scoops ? And will it benefit my tunes, in terms of air flow? Because as my tune needs high air flow as I read in many threads

AFE Drop in Replacment Air Filter PRO 5R Oil or K&N Drop In.

Both you can clean and re oil. In your area I would clean them every 5000-10,000 miles.

The drop in will help because it flows better then the factory paper filter and the new filter will be able to be cleaned and re oiled. The oil filter has added protection and the ability to clean. Win/Win.

Ur recommending oil filter rather than dry filter...bare in mind that the weather over here is sandy in addition to it being hot...oil might catch sand easily withy the air scoops right ?

Well it depends on how you look at it.

The ideal filter they don't sell for your conditions.

2) ProGuard7 is 5-layers of progressively finer oiled cotton gauze used in the Pro5R media backed by another 2-layers of finer porosity synthetic non-woven media which offers maximum protection. This media is ideal for those who do a lot of unpaved, off-road driving in severe dusty and dirty environments where protection is more important than maximum horsepower. This media is most popular with compression-ignition diesel truck owners.

The oil filter may gunk up faster but you have the ability to clean and re oil.

The dry filter may be able to be shaken out perhaps but it is not reusable once it gets heavily soiled.

So you need to find a happy medium of what's important to you. Changing filters once dirty or cleaning filters more often because they are oiled but having extra protection.

You can make Mr.5 work.

The trick is to re-locate your BOV. You can do this using a "J" shaped radiator hose available in any auto parts store. Bring your BOV and start looking around for something you think will work. I relocated mine so that the top of the BOV is facing the bottom of the car -it was enough to fit the Mr.5 Intake in without any interference.

Alternately you could just buy the Dinan intake.

I think I have part numbers for the hose I used if you want me to look it up.

Mann is a good replacement filter. You need filtration not airflow.

I dont think air filter will make a difference for you, you need a big FMIC (atleast 7"), probably a vented hood and remove the underpanel ... honestly these cars are not meant for hot weather .... also being a desert there I would not recommend you changing your stock air filter with DCI or AFEs, you'll have more dust go into the intake and have other issues emerge
