Jacking up front of car for oil change

Found some posts on lifting up the e92, but nothing bout just getting the front up. I am doing an oil change today. Can I use a jack for the rear and once the side of the car is up slip the jack stand under the front and then repeat for the other side. Will this work to get the front of the car up? Also, I plan on putting some duct tape on he metal of the jack stands so there isn't metal on metal does that sound like a good idea?

+1

But if you must use a jack, one of these will make things easier...

I don't have ramps and I plan on just putting something over the metal to make it softer. Is the way I mentioned the correct way for getting the front of the car up?

There should be a jack point under the front center of the car, its like a rectangular black piece. #1 in the image below. But id invest in ramps for next time

Just go get some ramps. They are cheap. Jacking the car up and using jack stands is a pain and more dangerous than ramps.

I don't have ramps I would rather just use my stands. The way that I mentioned, would that work. Jack up the rear side of car and then use jack stand under front side and do the same on the other side o have the front end of the car lifted? I can't access the central jack points as my jack is not long enough, so that way isn't an option.

Get some wood planks from Home Depot. 2 to 3 inches thick. Drive each front wheel on to them then you will have access to the jack point. Done...

I suggest you get a new jack that does fit under the front and can reach the front center jack point. You need a low profile, long saddle floor jack. IMO it is worth the investment of buying the proper jack for safety reasons. Think about it, if you buy the proper jack it will work well for you on your current BMW, any future BMW you may own, and will work on any other vehicle you may have now and in the future. Also, the car should be level when changing the oil as it aids in getting all of the oil out of the engine. For safety reasons you should always work under a car when it is level and properly supported by four (4) high-quality jack stands. When all four wheels are off the ground the car can not roll off whatever support it is on.

An example of the jack you should get is:
http://www.northerntool.com/shop/too...9613_200329613

Why spend half the money of a decent jack on ramps, which may not fit under the front bumper anyway, and are less safe than jack stands and harder to use, in place of the proper equipment which will last a lifetime* and work on almost any vehicle you will own in the future. *Meaning YOUR long and prosperous lifetime since your car will not fall on you while doing an $80 oil change.

I have these rhino ramps:

http://www.amazon.com/RhinoGear-1190...ds=rhino+ramps

These work just fine. If you're lowered, you can just put on on a cheat wood to bring the car up just a bit and then you will have clearance to go up the ramp. Cheap, durable, and quick. To be extra safe, put the jack stands too just in case if anything happens. You may want someone to guide you while driving up the ramps the first couple times. After a while, you will get used to doing it yourself.

Is it true that you want tthe car to be level when doing an oil change so all the oil drains out?

If you mean engine oil, then a slight tilt to the rear would be preferable to fully empty the sump.

If you mean transmission oil (MT) then you deffo need it level, or you may under- or over-fill.

Exactly. Hedrives a BMW, so he should spend a little bit of money and get the proper jack (of high quality like the car) to reach the center jack points as BMW recommends you do; rather than use some half-ass ramp setup that rednecks use for their pickup trucks (or ratted out Vegas).

Idk, it doesn't sound like it'll fit. But give it a shot and see if it'll work.

Dude... I literally told u the easiest way to do this. By wood from home depot for like 10 bucks. Cut it into 2 pieces and drive on top of it. This will give u the added height to get to the central jacking point. Jack it up then put your jack stands under the front side points. After you're done, place the wood back under the wheels, remove jack stands and lower the car. Slide the jack from under the central jack point then reverse off the wooden planks. Problem solved.

Wtf are you talking about. Check out raceramps.com. these aren"t your old school cheap metal rickety ramps. Good ramps are solid, stable, safe and easy to use. Why would you ever jack a car up and use jack stands to change the oil in any car? Talk about redneck.

In all honesty, take what these people are saying seriously. At the end of the day, is it really not worth it to spend more money for the right tool for the job if it means you don't die?

You definitely should not modify the use or application of any tools to make them fit your vehicle. If the jack does not fit, get one that does, or go to autozone and get a $80 set of ramps. The incline will give you a better drain from your oil pan anyways.

Not trying to be a dick, but it is not worth your life to get under the car with a half assed setup for an oil change.

Why Jack the car up at all? For less than a C-note, get a Miytvac oil extractor and change your oil through the dipstick. I have been doing it for years and on a couple occasions I Pulled the drain plug and all the oil was gone.
MB pioneered that method of oil change years ago. It's a snap.

Except there's no dipstick

Jack from the front center point, install the ramps, jack the rear from the diff (not de diff cover!!), install jacks on the rear, work on your car without risking your life
