Salt Marks on Carpet

I have tried just about everything but everytime I still end up just brushing it off as much as I can:

Is there a good product/trick to get salt stains off the carpet once they are on it and dry ?

On the floor mats or the carpet itself? Have you tried a carpet cleaner (like one of those bissell machines). You might try letting it soak for a bit in warm soapy water first, could help the stain come up easier. Just a couple ideas. Hope it helps.

Seriously, I use a few sprays of brake cleaner on my velour mattes. Rub gently with a dry towel, it will remove any kinds of stains (even oil and chewing gum) and didn´t do any harm to the mattes.

Yeah, its on the carpet itslef on my wife's BMW - she cares a little less than me about these things

It is on the left sidewall just before the accelerator pedal, so soaking is hard to do unless I flood the car

I have tried using soaked towels etc., with limited effect.

Those salt marks are most likely calcium salt, organic solvent (brake or carb cleaner) will not able to remove them. You need water (best is very warm water). Use a shop vac and pour some warm water over it, do this for a few time, the salt will be gone. Vacumn it dry. HTH.

In Canada we use some vinegar with warm water.

But then you risk stinking the car up. A friend tried this, got the mats cleaned, but the smell remained for months.

I went to Canadian Tire and you can get black automotive carpet there, its about $20 for a decent size roll. I cut some pieces of that to fit under my rubber mats (rubber mats are a must in the winter), and these pieces are big enough to basically cover all the exposed carpet around my mats. The black that it comes in is just a little darker than the carpets in the car, it doesn't look too bad overall. So hopefully they'll contain the salt and I'll have nice plush carpets in the spring.
