Anyone chipped a 320i?
So I know what lots of you are going to say. Buy a different model if you want more power, but that won't be of any help so .....
Has anyone chipped a 320i out there? I know the best increase you can get will be about 15hp and I'm OK with that. I'm trying to find out if anyone out there has actually bothered and if they would recommend it. My e93 320i M Sport is supposedly putting out 170hp and the option of getting 185hp sounds like a good one. |

If you remap your car, you will feel the car response faster and better, thats it. But i wouldn't mess aroubd the 320i engine since you have no problems with it, you know how bad they can be right?

Even if you manage to get 15bhp, which is doubtful on a normally-aspirated car you won't even notice it.

I'm not convinced that you wouldn't notice just 15hp increase. I appreciate its not going to be explosive when it heads down the road with that amount but I do think that there would be a difference. There would have to be.
I've spoken to a couple of tuners and they rekon that chipping the car shouldn't effect the coil or injector reliability which is the main weakness with this engine. I'm looking for anyone that has actually chipped this engine for their input and thoughts. |

The difference even if you realise 15bhp is an increase of 8% at peak, at a tiny point in the power curve. It simply will not be noticeable.
I changed the chip in my 944S2 because somebody gave it to me and it increased the power by 11 bhp on a rolling road and I could tell no difference whatsoever on the road.

Getting any sort of NOTICEABLE power increase from a small normally aspirated engine is expensive in the extreme, a simple "chip" certainly won't do it. Seriously take the advice on here and don't bother. If you want it to just sound like you are going faster, you'd be better off investing in a sports exhaust instead.

Maybe I'm just used to motorbikes that can get decent increases for reasonable money and where an 8% increase is deemed to be a lot.
If any power increase is only available in the upper rev band then it may be an issue if the band is very narrow. If its not then surly this will be a good thing as I only want a little bit extra poke when revving the engine anyway. I'd still like to hear from someone who has actually done this mod before making my mind up either way. |

I came from a pug 206 xsi 1.6 16v , did a chip. As i said you will feel faster response of the engine. A little more aggressive on the throttle feel.
Maybe the low power increase will not affect the coil. However on engines like my 335i, when i tune it i have severe coil park, injector issues whereas if i took thetune off the car is perfeclty normal. I would suggest to go stage one , intake mod, chip and a catbacl which then you will see 15bhp increase most likely. Then are you on to throttle bodies / cams etc for next stage.. |

i have the exact same car as you mate, and i did it, there was a deal on so me and a few friends decided to go for it, they both have 320d, so is was worth the chip, and as the others have said, you get a better throttle response, and thats it, you wont notice and difference, so i would say it would depend on the price of the chip really, i think i got mine for £150 or under

My car is N46 (earlier engine compared to yours). It comes with 150 BHP. So I got the chance to get it remapped. After Remapping I am getting 164 BHP and 228NM compared to 150 BHP and 200Nm. So additional 14 BHP and 28NM gives you; 1- Increased torque at lower RPM in all gears. 2- Slightly faster acceleration 3- Car is relatively more aggressive in first and second gear compared to other gears. 4- Cannot comment on mpg yet, however being heavy right footed, I am not expecting much gains here. In other words, when you put Shell or BP high octane fuel after using cheap tesco fuel and you feel the car more responsive. If you multiply that X2, so that sort of response/ acceleration you are talking about with the remap. However, I am more impressed with the torque in lower RPMs which seems more useful. Now as my car does not suffer from injectors or other 320 issues, so its good so far. These results may not imply on newer 320i engines but I guess it would give you some idea on 14-15 BHP gains.

If you want a lower power stock car for insurance purposes you should've bought the diesel tbh, at which point a remap offers 50bhp, not 5.
Save your cash and put it towards the next car. If you're bored of the car and hence want the remap I assure you you'll be disappointed. Or if you really want to go for it, map it in conjunction with a K&N air filter and a set of sports cat. You might get 20 or more horses that way.. But the £/hp still isn't worth it .. Dave

Used Elite remap company and heard good things about their maps.
Cost was £200. Seriously no regrets. In your case, your ECU is encrypted so it has to come out of the car to get mapped.

As people have mentioned, I may just save my money to get a 335d in the near future.

Why is getting a bigger engine model not an option?
It really is the only sensible answer, remapping an N/A 2 litre car is never going to set the world on fire |

You guys with 'big engine syndrome' ( in your 330s & 335s ) need to ride a motorbike, then you'll really know what acceleration is.
In the mean stop giving us 2 litre petrol engines a hard time if we want a little more oomph. My car is only 7 hp less than a 2 litre diesel that you all rave about but it's 100 times smoother and quieter .... Even with my intermittent misfire.
