Battery Registration

Who has done this in Portland and where? What did it cost you?

dealership is probably your best bet unless you want your battery to explode on you.

I don't know if there has been any recent battery explosions but I know there were quite a few, enough to not overlook it as mere coincidence. I've asked Kao (*********) about the battery registration and he told me that he couldn't.

Maybe contact a local bmw indy shop and ask them? I miss the good old days when you could just swap out the battery :P

DynaSport in NW Portland did it for free for me. I'd already swapped out the battery for an exact OEM replacement and showed up. Super good guys over there.

Ok so a I have spoken with several shops today about this and this is what I found:

Matrix
matrixintegrated.cc

They wanted $94 for Registration roughly 340 for the battery, install and Reg. They use interstate. Told them Kuni wants $60 for the registration the service rep. Gave me the look of death and wanted to call me a liar, but didn't.

Autohaus Bayern | www.autohausbayern.com

They wanted $55 dollars for the registration and tried to sell me a AGM battery even though mine is not, when I politely called them on it, by reading the specs off my battery and giving them the part number, they agreed and quoted me roughly 275-300 ish after my car was there, and they would need to keep it for 1/2 the day. I am 90% sure they use interstate but could be wrong I called several of these place today.

AR Auto Service
Talking to these guys they seemed really good even though I am probably not going to go with them, they don't charge a registration or install fee. They think its a bit much what we need to do to change a battery. They quoted 200 -340 based on the battery you choose and what fits your car, and what you want based on the spec of battery that fits the car, and what you prefer based on the battery you choose. Unfortunately they don't use interstate batteries. Which is what I would prefer to go with. My bias. They use World source one and Bosch.

http://www.worldsourceone.com/wso-batteries/

So I found another place they have quoted me a great price on the battery I want, less than I could find myself, and 55-65 registration fee. I am scheduled to have them check my battery for free, (only had the warning light for a moment once). And if I replace it should cost me roughly 215 dollars. I will update this with the name after I see what they are like and will let you know what I think good or bad.

By the way Dyna sport was next on my list just didn't make it to them today. What did they charge, and what batteries do they use?

Hope this is helpful to people. There seems to be a wide variety they are charging us all here. Perhaps we should start sharing this information and even the playing field.

Great post thank you for detailing your experience!

Any update to this?
Where did you purchase?
Cost?
Flooded or AGM cell? (sounded like you didnt want a AGM cell? Why?)
Capacity / Ah rating cell?
Brand?

So did you just register, or did you end up changing any of the cell parameters requiring coding?

Who is capable of doing this locally ?

Anyone have advice on a AGM VS flooded cell, cost VS benefits?
I do lots of little trips, 15-30 min, ~1 100 mile trip a week.
Any advice for the new boy?

TIA

sorry for the late reply

I ended up having my battery tested for free at Freeman motors, they did that for free it was holding a charge well, so I have not replaced it yet.

I was going to go with them as they were going to replace it with a Interstate battery cheaper than I could by it from Interstate and really reasonable price to replace and code. 50 bucks maybe. It was the best I found.

My car uses non AGM, and I think I am not suppose to plus it costs much more. The interstate warranty is great.

One word of caution while freeman had the best price for this, I just recently did another repair- Fuel pump/thermostat and they were 300 higher than Kuni, with the BMW CCA discount at Kuni.

Pricing here is very odd, and several indy's are more than the dealer.

I have noticed that, that one needs to be careful and ask first...
Still not sure who to trust, and whom to build a relationship with, I am sure I will need it down the road, and I would love to have a trusted advisor that has gone through the ringer already.

My cell seems to read ~12.5Vdc resting after a day ... But if I have the auxiliary (one start button push) it doesn't take long before the iDrive is crying and whining about low battery voltage

So I really want to come to a solidified understanding of what I should do once the time comes.

Is Wedge more of just an enthusiasts around here or does he deal with all this trivial “hoop jumping” that is engineered into these cars?

IIRC he seemed to be willing to do the registration and indeed coding when necessary.

From what little systematic explanations I have found here, I believe the AGM cell will be the cell I choose just based on the many short trips I make, supposedly these cells are more capable of dealing with this kind of usage patterns right? But is it worth the hassle?

But I have not really seen any feedback to support that supposition, nor an explanation of why these cells are physically able to do so, and warrant the extra effort and cost.

And to add more mud to the water, it seems these cars are fairly tolerant of low battery voltage, which makes the low volt notification more of an annoyance than anything...
